Photographer's Note
Monkey see Monkey do
I was visiting a dear friend of mine in South Calcutta and having a grand time at his house. We heard this excited shouts out on the street and we all came out of the house. A group of black face monkeys were invading the neighborhood. Amazingly these two boys were calmly sitting on the brick wall watching the monkeys. Of course I could not let the moment go without being captured.

Hi Pranab,
Welcome back! After long time! So i see you ve been back home! Nice trip?
I read about the monkey invasion in Delhi(the macaque species though) even causing human deaths... they are a common sight in Indian cities, but since last year and massive deforestation in Haryana and surroundings areas, they all gather there in Delhi!
Nice candid shot of the kids looking at the animals... overcast sky gave muted but nicely contrasted colors...
Wish you a happy 2008 as well!!!

Hi Pranab,
What an amazing work!! I admire your ability to respond so quickly and capture this interesting scene. I like the framing a lot.
Your photo really does teach us about the world. At first I thought, "Oh isn't that cute?" And then I read Laurent's note and looked again at the size of these fellows. Those are BIG guys and those tails!! It's is interesting how animals take to the city, just like humans, when their habitat is destroyed. In Ocean Beach, I commonly see racoons, skunks and opossums and at my folk's house, coyotes as well.

Hello, Pranab,
what a marvelous capture! I like the way they sit so quietly in observation of the monkees. I think taking the shot behind the boys was a really cool way to do it, too. Like they are watching a scene from a movie. I like the softly muted colors and that wonderful shade of blue trimming on the building. Ever so nicely done!! Many thanks and warm regards,
Shelly

Hi Pranab,
It is shows how children are anxious to know about monkeys and lagoors. Lokenath Electrical hoarding used as rain shelter is really a fun.
Thanks for sharing.

Who's watching whom?
Great shot, Pranab. Excellent street-life, daily-life shot, well composed and sharp. I think the Sony is known for its sharpness. These monkeys look large, and very healthy. I believe one should keep away from them, no matter how 'cute', as they carry rabies. Australians have been known to develop rabies after being bitten by monkeys in India and returning home clue-less about their incubating fate.
Anyway, just a terrific daily life shot of documentary quality.
Regards,
Andrew

Well seen & well timed shot Pranab. As I read in your thread that this was taken in Haridebpur. I think the kids are quite used to these hanumans & hence their reaction would be rather quiet. Looking fwd. for more Kolkata shots!

Hello Pranab
These monkeys seem to be quite relaxed and I can see the couple, sitting on the edge of the terrace, is enjoying one of its favourite activities :) Black face monkeys, here in Goa are very difficult to photograph, they escape as they see you. I have them every day on my roof and in my garden. But I never manage to do a proper capture.
Cheers

i think i would prefer to have monkeys around than skunks. at least these souls don't emit horrible scents that keep me awake all night long and then go to work the following day groggy!
what a timely capture you have here! i'd only wished i were around to join the 2 boys.....:-)

A great shot, Pranab. A not too familiar scene these days ... the 'hanumans' too are vanishing from Kolkata. You saw very well.

Hello Pranab,
Interesting creatures to have for a visit!
And maybe not only nice, I suppose they can be naughty at times too, hehehe...
I like the composition, with the two boys watching the monkeys and I think you should visit more often..!
