Photographer's Note
The Yi people are an ethnic group in China, Vietnam, and Thailand. Numbering 8 million, they are the seventh largest of the 55 minor ethnic groups officially recognized by the People's Republic of China. They live primarily in rural areas of Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou, and Guangxi, usually in mountainous regions.
The Yi speak a Tibeto-Burman language and have their own script. As animists, Yi worship the spirits of ancestors, hills, trees, rocks, water, earth, sky, wind, and forests, but their religion also includes elements from Daoism, shamanism and fetishism
Traditional Yi society was based upon four castes: the Nuohuo, the Qunuo, the Ajia and the Xiaxi, the lowest being slaves, while the highest rank was determined by blood lineage only. In the Liangshan Mountains this system lasted till 1949.
My Yi pictures were taken in the Liangshan Yi Autonomous Region in southern Sichuan. This kind man is a trader from the mountains at the market in Puge. The pipe is typically Yi, but his clothes are Chinese army style. You can tell from his shoes that he is poor, but I admire the dignity of his pose.

Hi Benny, very good composed photo, with very good colors and soft blurred peoples in the background. The details are perfectly sharp on the man in the front

Hi Benny, good picture, I like the point of view with the men kinda of aligned... Colours are really good too. Maybe just a little less of soft focus at the back would have suited the image better. Chau chau!

Hi Benny,
This is a beautifully composed picture – although there are a lot of elements in it, it doesn’t feel at all cluttered. I particularly like the man’s dignified expression and the way the line of the four men is balanced by the baskets. The interlocking postures of the two horses provide the perfect background.
Was this a scan of a print or a slide? Just a minor point but there seem to be some dust/scratches (mainly on the horses, but also for example on the fourth man’s lower lip) which could easily be cleaned up either by using digital ICE in the scan program or by using the clone tool in Photoshop.
Very interesting and informative note too.

J'aime vraiment beaucoup!

Beautiful portrait Benny. I've been to China a couple of times (Yunnan)and love visiting the rural areas with the different ethnic groups. The people are so friendly and welcoming. You have captured a typical scene very well. Chris

Hello Benny
I love it! Composition, framing, dof, the rendering of green. But mostly is the emotion, the feeling that is involved! Very good!

I like how you used shallow DOF to show us this man's cultural environment, yet separate him visually from that environment. That cultural environment is very vivid, with the horses, the wicker baskets, and his pipe. I guess he lives in a place the new "modern" China has not yet reached. Very well done, Benny. Regards, Ken.

Superb photo. Good balanced composition, great focus, and nice subdued colors. Have you tried this in black and white? Seems really suited for a sepia.

Wonderful capture of the horse-keeper's expression, and even better control of DOF to accentuate the focus and tell the background story at the same time. Also, thanks for the informative note.

Woa! Benny, this is excellent! combined to your note, I feel like travelling there and feel the moment with those 4 smoking and the horses in the background. I can smell the smoke and the odor of the horses. I like how the man in the foreground is smiling while smoing his pipe while the other 3 have sort of a curious face, wondering what's going on, not completely realizing they're also in the frame.
Oh, how I wish you had moved just a little bit to your left to make sure all the faces are in the picture. And I'm sure they would have waited for you to move as they don't seem to be in a hurry. I also wish that there was more smoke coming out of the pipe! Would have been extraordinary.
now, how do you pronounce Yi? is it like Yee? and what's the blue on the horse on the right?
best regards!
Marc
