Photographer's Note
I waited for the sunset along a dusty road leading to marketplace to appreciate the view of the silohuettes and the dust against the sloping rays of sun.
Located in a depression approximately 80 meters (262ft) below sea level, Turpan is a dry and extremely hot city. Nicknamed the "Oven", temperatures in the summer soar to 40° C (104° F). In contrast, winters are bitterly cold, with temperatures dropping to -15° C (5° F). Despite the extreme weather, visitors enjoy coming to this relaxed and friendly town. 70% of the population are Uighurs and they make a concerted effort to make visitors feel welcome. The locals have even covered the main walkways and paths with vine trellises which transforms normal streets into charming green tunnels.
Turpan is synonymous with grapes and wine is the area most famous product. Despite the stifling heat and dry climate, delicious and succulent grapes are cultivated here due to the ingenuous irrigation system installed over 2,000 years ago that transfers water from the glaciers.
Although Turpan is no longer a major Chinese city, during the Han dynasty (206-220BC) it was a crucial part of the Silk Road. The ancient cities of Jiaohe and Gaochang were strategically important and powerful centers of trade. The ruins of both these cities can be easily visited from Turpan.

Hi Luca,
great portrait of a city, with mythical elements. The light is incredible and the composition very clear. The details are fantastic; for instance the water running out the bucket.
Congratulations, Gerrit

I am learning from both your shot and your note.
Photographic techniques can be learned after certain amount of time, but the experience and syntax to be used for a note may take an entire life to practice. Do you have a ny tips for me?

Hi Luca,
What an amazing color! The dust on the background reflects wonderfully the condition of this dirty road without compromising the shapness of the main subjects on the firt plan. How did you got it? The composition is relly nice. The contrast between the effort of the man on the right and the relaxation and pleasure of the two passagers on the carriage tells a history on itself.
Best Regards,

Hello Lucas. The light is awsome in your photograph, turning the subjects almost in silhouettes. Good composition, a sense of movement, and a dreamy scenery. No way I can see the grapes in the frame though... ;o)

Great light throughout, you can really sense the dusty heat and a nicely balanced shot. I even like the blue/silver bicycle frame - very well done to capture that.

Wow! This kind of picture really seems to be your forte--some low angle sun, a little bit of dust or sand, and suddenly a common event of daily life is a masterpiece. I like the contrast of the bicycle coming towards the viewer against the water-bearer walking away, almost a little bit of old-meets-new. This picture really "feels". I can't say how it feels, but it just has some really strong mood with it, and I think that such an intangible appeal is what seperates the good photographs from the great photographs.
Thanks!

Helo Luca,
Apologies for not getting to this sooner. Clearly a masterpiece (as you can tell by the response so far...)The bluishb reflection on the bicycles, handlebards, the wonderful orange mist permeating the scene, and your evocative title all set the mood for this first class movie: "Sunset Road".
Bravissimo, veramente,

Fantastic shot Luca - I hadn't seen this before - I like it for all the obvious reasons and I'm sure what many others have said - the little detail of the water falling from the pail is so important - it gives it such a nice moment of movement within an image of larger movements - really nice!

What a beautiful picture. I love the lighting and the silouette effect. Timing is important and doubly so now that I see some liquid dripping from the bucket. My wife and friends can't understand why photographers are so patient. They are upset whenever we go on vacation. I;ll have to show them this photo to show them why it is so important to wait for the right moment. Thanks for sharing! - Mike O.
