Photographer's Note

Next up in my series on Tiananmen Square is this shot of an elderly man making his way from Tiananmen (this is the gate itself -- in Chinese 'men' means gate) towards Chairman Mao's mausoleum, which sits in the centre of the Square.

There are a great many different types of people on the square. There are the young children, with parents, grandparents, friends and family. There are the foreign tourists (some even with kids), the photographers (many Chinese and foreign), the snapshot photographers (the friendly guys that take your photo and have it printed for you), the bottle collectors (this man is one), the kite fliers, the sellers ("You want Chairman Mao watch? Postcards? Mao's red book?") and of course the guards in their green uniform.

All of these different types and classes of people come together to make the Square the amazing place it is.
