Photographer's Note

This was taken on the road to more deserted plains in between Lhasa and Zhangmu, facing the front window of the bus. For a while there, it did seem like a never-ending stretch of deserted mountain scapes with a few squarish tibetan abodes dispersed very sparsely through the landscape. There was a person sitting on the engine between the driver and his 'guide'. The guides are taken for their ability to speak English and make arrangements for accommodation and food along the way. Our bus guide was pleasant, nice and had a sense of humour. Although some guides that are provided when hiring a jeep do not appear to know the road nor speak a word of English. When one travels along such stretches of road one does develop a sense of community within the vehicle.

I cropped the image to focus on the road ahead. Unfortunately, the image does have a bit of noise in the sky and the horizon is slightly tilted. Then again, one cannot expect perfect shots whilst the bus is in motion along the dirt track. The track is a major highway between Lhasa and Kathmandu. This was a relatively quiet piece of road, earlier numerous trucks and jeeps passed us by. The jeeps are usually hired by groups of tourists for seven day hikes (drives) trough the various towns along the way and also up to the Mt Everest base camp. The basecamp lays about 90km from the main highway and costs approximately 400 Yuan to enter, about 8 Yuan to the US dollar. Whereas half a century ago a trek to the basecamp and up Mt Everest was the highlight of any national mountaneering effort, today the basecamp is a regular tourist attraction.

Hmm... I may repost a colour corrected image at a later date.
