Photographer's Note
Xing Aowei is an Olympic Gold Medalist in gymnastics who I met in Beijing just prior to the Sydney Olympics. He trains 6 hours a day and constantly rips his blisters open as he seeks perfection and honor for his country. This was shot with a single 1K light. I did a little PS work to add a little contrast.

WOW! What dedication, and perseverance this young guy has. This is a great photo. Perfect lighting, and his pose shows just enough of his pain.
My only suggestion would be maybe to crop a bit more off the top of his head, right above his hairline. Have a look at the workshop...

awesome portrait! great pose, excellent lighting and shadows. good notes, i love the simple background and how we can see the bruises. i like pamela's version too, although maybe a bit too excessive on the cropping (but maybe i'm just splitting hairs :-)) anyways great shot, goes to my favs. congrats!
p.s. do you know how he did in sydney?

Yes, I like Pamela's crop too. Great photo. Weird lighting & setting, kind of like some industrial space in China somewhere, but perfectly in tune w/ the subject.

Apart from being an excellent gymnast, Xing seems to be very photogenic!
I love the contrast between his cute, almost dreamy face expression and hard bruises and blood.
The other thing that strikes me is a beutiful light.
You were very lucky to get this shot, David!
Looking forward to seeing more from you in future - your existing portfolio reveals some real gems!

great photo David! Incredible mood, as I like pamela crop, I must say I prefer your colours - they create this little bit unreal mood, they make this photo - of a man far away from "normal" life, of his loneliness of a sportsman.. really, really good
