Photographer's Note
For me, our daytrip to the Ganden monastery was the highlight of our stay in Lhasa. The monastery is located approximately 40 km from Lhasa and is relatively easily reached by bus or other means of road transport. It will take you about one hour to get there. The first part is a very good paved road through the Kyi-chu river valley, but the last part is a dirt-road that swirls up the mountain. While you are climbing, the monastery reveals itself in its full glory; a truly magnificent sight!
Ganden is built on the crest of a curved mountain and lies at about 4500 meter altitude; about 1000 meter above the river valley. The views over the surrounding area are superb. If you climb the hill to the left of the entrance (in the direction of the prayer flags) you can get a marvellous view on the monastery. We just climbed there with the two of us. The climb is pretty tough at this altitude, but it is really worth the effort. We just sat down and enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere and the breathtaking view. Being aware that we were actually there, in Tibet, just with the two of us, watching the monastery from above, without hearing other human sounds, under a blue sky.... it was really special and even emotional.
This picture was taken near the prayer flag location on this hill. We also left a few prayer flags on this special place. The next picture that I will post, offers a more conventional but clear view on the monastery from a little higher up the mountain.

All of the photos of Lhasa I had chances to see before were taken upward.
Your photo is the first one to set me into a point of view looking down. Recalling my failure to climp the Great Wall in 2004, I appreciate this sharing: you save me another failure if I ever dream of a climp higher than the monastery complex.
I've had the idea of paying a visit to Lhasa. Could you advise me between 2 options — New Delhi > Kathmandu > Lhasa and Hong Kong > Chengdu > Lhasa — which one is easier to trek, based on time and immigration document factor?
Thanks,
Thanh

Hi Michael, love the depth caused by the perspective you took with this shot. Following the line of flags down to the bottom of the mountain, it feels like it is like a military training zipline to transport people across down to the city! The scenery which stretches all the way back to the mountains all within this frame is well done!

I like what you did on this one, Michael. The scenic view of the high-altitude monastery would already be an impressive photo by itself, but the way in which you included the colorful prayer flags as a graphical foreground detail does elevate this photo into something special. Excellent notes, too, as usual.

Great shot.
love the prayer flags. They are so photogenic. What I like is how your POV gives us a view of that magnificent view.

Hi Michael,
A superb and colorful view between the vivid colors of the prayer flags, nice to see how wou have framed the main part of the village between the two lines of them, and of coursse the vertical format is a must here, I love this beautiful and clear view.
Have a nice week end,
Jean-Yves

a really nice perspective on Ganden Michael - great foreground detail with the flags stretching across the whole frame and down into the image - the monastery in the mid ground and all the vastness of land and sky as a final backdrop - a really good image showing well the whole place at three levels - a really nice sharp image for this kind of subject -
best wishes Kev

Hi Michael, what a wondeful view on the monastery. Even without the flags there is an enormous depth, but the way you lead our eys to it, is marvellous. The way the monastery is build along the curve of the mountain is beautiful to see. I clicked on the link "Ganden monastery" not many uploads, but beautiful!/

Great composition with the lines of flags leading down the hillside. The view over the town & distant mountians is great too, and the colours are vibrant. Good work!
