Photographer's Note
there is a Chinese saying that goes,
one who lives by the mountains is dependent on the mountain,
and one who lives by the coast is dependent on the sea.
Every day when the sunset is setting in the west,
the sands full of golden light,
the fisherwomen would gather to the sands for collecting fish.
this old woman was 77,
but still came here for looking for some small fish
which can be processed for selling.
i asked her why didnt stay home for enjoying life.
she replied with smile, how to live without working
with two sons unemployment?
But i know, even if her son got good job,
she live with higher standard,
she still would come here.
Getting married and having sons early,
taking care of family,
working hard for their family,
looking after their sons' sons,
...
that's what her whole life.
that is Chinese.
(sorry for the poor english)

Hi Mingfang. I agree with Francis, this photo is timeless. It is a nice, simple composition, she is centered but for that is fine, there is no reason she shouldn't be centered in this one. I like her expression as well and with her catch in her hands. Miao Miao!

Black&White.
謝謝,再見!

Mingfang,
A very nice shot. She has a very expressive face, very full of life. Your notes are interesting and add an extra dimension to the image. I also think that the wide white frame suits it nicely, creating a sense of space.
Very nice image!

Ni hao Mingfang,
I like this photo for the pose of the old lady and her expression. In my opinion it would be a great photo if you placed her a bit on the left side of the image and turn B&W to sepia to give to the image an "old days atmosphere".
Xiexie for sharing! :-)

She's such a unique photo subject- I love her smile. Black and white was a good choice- it does give a timeless look. Its very interesting about the fish collecting, I really enjoyed how you described it in your note. Great work.

This is a fabulous portrait Mingfang, a straight forward image that tells a story. Perhaps not the most original, but so classic and full of context that I can't help but love it.

A very intense look you have here, very well done Ming Fang. Yes, as an ethnic Chinese I can understand what you're saying very well. But I think times are changing and such family-oriented determination may not be prevalent in the cities? At least for me, I feel that in a materialistic environment like Singapore, it's hard to find such spirits now.
