Photographer's Note

This will be the last in my series of photos about the people in and around Tiananmen Square in Beijing, China.

This was taken at around 8am in the small park to the left of the Forbidden City, directly infront of Tiananmen (the gate). It's Chinese name is Zhongshan Park (and from my very basic understanding 中 or 'zhong' means middle and 山/'shan' means mountain.

It is common for groups of people to practice tai chi early in the mornings, which is what this man is doing here. My limited understanding of tai chi is that it is a form of exercise that helps control breathing, as well as a basic form of self defense.

However, this man is practising alone, not with a group, which seems very uncommon to me. Unlike many of the elderly performing the moves, this man seemed very smooth and was highly capable of holding each stance or position for considerable time, without even a hint of wobble. This, coupled with the loose fitting black trousers and simple white top lead me to believe (or hope ;) that he is a 'master' of the form, although I have no way to support my claims.

I hope you enjoy this shot.
