This picture was taken near Puge in southern Sichuan. We went there to catch a glimpse of the Yi people. This kind woman was selling vegetables and giving away smiles at the local market.
This will probably be the last shot I upload from our 2001 ramble through south-west China. This two month trip through Sichuan, Yunnan and Guizhou is still one of our best, though.

Hello Benny,
I agree with you that it's meeting people that makes travelling worth while, especially when meeting cheerful market ladies like this one. A very nice portrait, well cropped and with fine colours and sharpness.
By the way I strongly sympathize with your opinions expressed in the "I quit"-forum, although I haven't bothered to take part of the discussion.

Dear Benny,
It is difficult to resist her warm smile. :-)
I liked the texture and the strong contrast. Scans from analogs have often created problems for me, here the heightened sharpness seem to have resulted in some loss of details and halos, but, IMHO, that's not critical.
I could have suggested a bigger crop from the three sides except the bottom.

hi benny,
I keep repeating my all of my friends that China is not on my list, yet I can't stop looking at the many pictures posted on this (diverse and incredible) country... I think my head is too full of cliches about China to be able to make an informed decision about my next "big trip" :)
I won't repeat myself about the colours here - I like them for what they are and not only because they remind me of the analogue past :)
another thing I don't do very often is shoot portrait photos - meaning: using vertical orientation. my eyes tend to wander horizontally... this portrait-portrait (ahahah) of yours has excellent proportions and a classic composition, I look at it and I feel that all the elements are in their right place (even the missing hand...).
going back to what you were saying in your comment (about those who stick to a style and those who reinvent themselves): I think this China series of yours has a great look that links all the shots and conveys really the feel of a travelogue with a distinct atmosphere... sometimes the style we use comes straight from the way we feel in a place, or in a situation.
