Photographer's Note
Henan province is located in eastern central China,
It is the cradle of China's ancient civilization.
Kaifeng city the capital of four dynasty,
Shao lin temple the martial arts home, that's all belong here.
Here is the place my first time traveling for the lantern festieval in 2001.
and then I see this scence and shoct for the game of dogs fighting.
but that's a traditional game since Song dynasty.
During this year, American movie still hit China,
differenct from the love story of TATANIG,
CLADIATOR is a spellbinding historical drama,
Therefor the figure of Maximus went into more Chinese audiences' heart, even to be a hero.
But Here at the moment when I watched these dogs gladiator,
i just thought why the director of Chinese would make a dog version GLADIATOR? It wouldn't be as good as the Amrican GLADIATOR?

Mingfang, this is a fantastic photo, technicallities apart (which is all very good starting from the contrast, composition etc), the photo is unusual and extremely interesting, mostly because we can never take it because dog fighting is illegal in the western world, and unless you can get into illegal rings, chances are you will never see it (it's not to say it doesn't exist here, unfortunately it still does).
As for the subject itself, I can't even begin to tell you how much I hate those people, for me they are simply stupid f##ks that take pleasure in pain and suffering of animals which affects not only the two pits in the ring but millions of dogs and poeple around the world. Not only animals are in the horrendours pain with their flesh ripped apart, but the thirst for blood those f$$$ng poeple have gives punks around the world an impression that it's good to have a tough a$$ dog, make them aggressive which leads our stupid government to banning of whole breeds and putting to sleep thousands of dogs that haven't done anything wrong.
The tradition may be going back to Song dynasty, but something must have happened along the way because pit bulls type dogs used in this event came hundreds years after the dynasty died, they origin in England and not in China, so the tradition theory is a stretch. Yes, in some cases dog fighting can be made humanly, in some Japanese rings (and this can be called tradition because their use the same japanese breeds for centuries, akitas and tosa inu) they put muzzle on dogs so they don't injure themselves and let them wrestle, a bit like sumo. Poeple are happy and animals are not harmed, it's all good.
Fantastic picture of a despicable event.

wow, Mingfang. This photo is very intense, very strong. the composition is perfect, you have so many faces in the crowd reacting to the scene, that is important to see, some people look with amusement, some people with indifference. the contrast is also very good in the photo, wonderful b/w. you are a great photographer and i am eager to see more of this powerful series.
humbled,

Wow what power! This is one of the rawest, most HOMNEST and most powerful photos I have seen here in a LONG time. You are getting into Mackeda territory in terms of emotional frankness with such work! I love this.

Hi Mingfang, I agree with the comments of Peter here... For me it is a powerful capture of some of the injustice that is still around let it be against fellow human or other creatures on this earth. Bala

Mingfang,
I think this is an amazing photo and even though it's very hard for me to look at because I love dogs (and I hate cruelty to any animals) I'm glad you posted it.
I think it's very important that Trek Earth isn't just a place for "pretty" pictures. In fact I get very bored with pretty pictures after a while (sunsets and flowers and that kind of thing) unless they are also original and creative. You have posted a powerful picture that shows us something we normally wouldn't see. It isn't pretty, but it's important, which is much better.
Besides that, this is simply an excellent photograph. It is very nice technically, and it is very emotional, showing human beings when they are not hiding their feelings. In this case their feelings make me a little bit sick, but it's a real part of the world and it's better to see it than to have it hidden away.
I should also tell you that I read your reply to Peter and his answer to you, and I agree with him: I don't think this photo makes China look bad. Many countries have illegal dog-fighting, cock-fighting, and similar events. It happens in the United States, for instance, so China is no worse than the U.S. in this way. I'm glad to hear that it is illegal.
Best wishes,
Lee

Mingfang, I think in the same way of Peter.... but I saw your answer and I understand that it is better to show what happens than decide to hide it. I am very sad for these dogs, they are so sweet animals that only wish to love their owners. I kniw that , although it is forbidden, such matches are fightned also in Italy, somwhere in the south. At the end of this month I wioll start for China (Shanghai, Guangxi, Hong Kong) and I hope not to see fighting animals, no dogs and no cocks.
I was forgetting to appreciate you photo! It is very well done, a very strong and vivid scene. Ciao!! Livia

I like how you captured this ancient civilization
The moment before the dog are released
I know it a culture thing too
The expressions here are amazing
The people holding the dogs the people sitting looking at the dogs
Small details al over
Good catch

Hello Mingfang
Terrific picture, in the middle of the action. Very dynamic, with a timeless documentary feel to it (because of the bl/w). A superb document!
