Photographer's Note
Another one of those "not to good technically" but still one of my favorite photos from my experience in Cambodia. This photo reminds me of the ignorance and selfishness I saw by the tourists who visit. In this photo I see a little child trying to live (she was selling fans - you can see part of a pink one on the extreme left side) while the tourists, tired of the constant onslaught of children, just walk by and ignore her.
We were sitting there for a few minutes and just watching the crowds go by and noticed how no one would even so much as give her a "hello" or a "no" but would just plain ignore her. I'm not saying anyone should have bought anything from her, but at least treat her like a person. At one point we even saw a man raise his hand a little like he was going to push her out of his way. It really makes me ashamed to be part of the "western world" to see how ignorant people can be.
I will even admit that I went to Cambodia to see Angkor....and was glad to see the temples. But more impressive to me were the people. I was glad the temples were there to distract all the tourists so I could interact with the children and try to learn a little from them without much interference.
So I guess I want to thank all the ignorant people for leaving the real Angkor all to me....Thanks

ya,we live,unfortunatelly in a world of the ignorance..technically is good in my modest opynion,like how you catched that girl and blurred the rest..it's lonely in this world,that tell me your photo and this is the plain truth..think not just there is the ignorance..hm

well put & I know what you mean - sometimes a photo that isn't 'perfect' - ie - obscured in this case actually adds to your point of the masses ignorning the children/people of Cambodia, who are in fact among the nicest people I've ever come across in my travels. Today is also the Cambodian New Year...

Hi John,
I love this photo and I think it complements the story in your note perfectly. You say that the tourists walk around as if they don't even notice the people who's country they are in and then the fact that this girl seems to walk straight through your shot as you are about to take a picture of the girl perfectly illustrates this. I'm not saying that's exactly how it happened, but it's the thought that came to me after reading your note.
Also, I agree with you totally about the people of Cambodia. I have recently returned from a 1 year RTW trip and Cambodia was my second favourite country and probably 90% of my reasons for this can be attributed to the people - they are such a beautiful and friendly nation.
Technically, I think you should also give yourself a little more credit here too: The light catching the young girl's face is wonderful and your DOF and exposure are excellent. Personally I think this is of the best photos in your collection so far.
