Photographer's Note
I remember when:
Pizzas weren't delivered but milk was.
Newspapers were delivered by boys on their bicycles.
We had a dress code at school and boys hair could not be over the ears. Shirt had to be tucked. Girls' skirts could not be above mid knee. Although I remember many got away with it especially if they had decent looking legs
No convenient stores, we got our last minute necessities at the local store. I remember you could run a bill at the store and pay on payday which many took advantage. This was before credit cards became popular.
Listening to my transistor radio.
Cars without turn signals which resulted in using hand signals to make a turn.
Photos were taken with a film camera & large flash bulb.
Smoking was suppose to be cool and was depicted in movies in a positive manner which resulted in candy cigarettes being sold for kids to emulate adults.
Coffee shops, restaurants, and milk bars (milk bar is a term used in some parts of Australia for suburban local shops or general stores) had jukeboxes.
Playing records and how they would skip if the record was scratched or because the needle started wearing out. We then had to place a coin on top of the arm to keep the record from skipping.
The old black and white TV that took forever to warm up before you saw the picture.
I also remember when ladies wore stockings, long before panty hose were introduced.
This was taken near the Flinders St. Railway station, along the Yarra River & opposite Southbank.
Scheetrin is a word coined by Paolo (paololg) meaning a small skeleton.

Caro Monello
Hehehe What a great note - and how true. Times have changed, not always for the better. and the scheetrins seem to become more er scheety. This from a jealous old bird with too much meta on her bones. Id be' giving the skinny sort the same look as the lady on the left :). Anyway, a great capture with impeccable timing and good humour as usual.
Good to' dee you and your hardware drive back, un abbraccio

Hi Santo,
Th past is beautiful indeed, but the future is what happens to all societies that develop, change, much like Australia. I often fondly remember these past days too, but have more excitement for the future, the cultural melting pot we are.
The woman to the right is tense and angry, something I see alot here. The insinuation the other woman is a skeleton is a bit harsh..all shapes and sizes..
It is an interesting street shot.
Cheers

Ciao Santo,

Hello Santo,
In spite of the lack of visible tattoos this picture carries your unmistakable trademark. The two ladies are very well spotted and captured in a way that makes them look almost like caricatures of a generation gap. A caricature made with tenderness and respect, I should add. Technically this is perfect too.
Kind regards,

Ecco...a stessa roba!) :-)))
Aver messo ste do femane a confronto xe sta come metar na gazzella e un folpo sbatωo (octopus slammed) insieme, l'effeto el xe uguae! :-)
Me piase e to note, i tosati de ancuς i gavaria tanto da imparar lesendo queo che te ga scrito. Bravo!

Hello Santo,
This is brilliant!
I've not heard the word "Scheetrin" before, but in Scotland, we would cal this girl a "Skelf":
skelf: [sk*llf] noun (Scot. and northern English, dialect)
1 a splinter of wood, esp. when embedded accidentally in the skin
2 a thin or diminutive person
[from Scottish]
A fabulous comment on life and well seen and well taken - a "Decisive Moment" indeed! I just love the look on the face of the older woman while the "Scheetrin" walks on oblivious to all but her 'phone conversation. But, most of all, I think I like the comparison between the two pairs of legs!
Fabulous!
Kind Regards,
John.

Santo? La tua foto ι eccellente, bravissimo! Ma tu...altro che santo! Sei cattivissimo!! Please, Santo, don't be SO cruel in the future!!! Hem...maybe because now ( in April) I will get 58? Uhhhhhh!!!! HELP!

haha
excellent note, its a joy to read.
and just for the record, i see nothing wrong with the scheetrin! :)
everything here is a contrast, especially the footwear!
She looks asian, with a Japanese flare.
a funny scene, well timed to have the lady on the right looking over with that staring glance!
See you around

Hello Santo,
The photograph says it all. We are 1/8 of the way into the 21st century, and life is very different. I like your essay very much. Somethings were better, some are worse, and the ubiquitous mobile phone certainly has represented a revolution, albeit they can be a nuisance. Many many more accidents have taken place on the road. Nonetheless, I love having my iPhone. By the time my university students emerge from classes they are on their mobile phones, sometimes walking in pairs, and I wonder whether they are speaking to person right next to them. I've place this love shot, a social commentary really, in a new group theme I concocted, Mobile Phones.
Warm regards,
Bulent

Ciao Santo
Sounds like the late 60's / early 70's in Brisbane (which was years behind Sydney & Melbourne up until about 1980, when it really started to catch up.) Now, Brisbane is like Melbourne was in the late 1980's, together with the technology, contemporary issues, politics etc of 2012. A good juxtapositioning of the old at left, with the new at right. The older woman could be contemplating her own younger days? Good use of a shallow dof here too. Tfs!

Hi Santo, your image and note has had me in hysterics this morning. I also dont usually everones critique, but the comments have been fun too read.. ..
My first reaction was that the woman was upset because maybe the younger one was talking loudly on the mobile ( my pet hate).. but reading the comments - How niave of me..
I have two further "remember" to add- especially having been brought up in the colonies (South Africa)
I remember when the shops did not open on Sundays (except the local corner cafe) and when they did not play adverts on the Radios on Sundays and a third - They did not play sport on Sundays -- They were the days for going to Church, and relaxing on the beach or in front of the pool having a BBQ with friends - a " Day of Rest" and a forth- You did not phone anyone after 9 thirty at night (unless it was an emergency) Those were the days Have a great day.

Ciao Santo
Simo

Hello Skippy,
Long time no see on TE.
Your photo of shoes has a lot more meaning than mine which is used for commercial advertising purpose. I love the look of that young lady, of course, but I also like the expression of the granny who looked at her with great admiration. What a contrast!
