Photographer's Note
A smiling Tibetan lady seen at Barkhor Square in Lhasa, capital of Tibet, in the autumn of 1986.
Barkhor is the name of the district immediately surrounding the famous Jokhang Temple of Lhasa. the spiritual centre of Lamaism, the Tibetan variety of Buddhism. The large square in front of the temple is a popular meeting-place for the locals during the long Tibetan evenings (Tibet in on Beijing time so in the summers the sun doesn't set until late). People come here to mingle, to see and be seen, buy some snacks and enjoy the closeness of their holiest temple.
During the week I spent in Lhasa in 1986 I used to spend the evenings among the friendly crowds at Barkhor Square, enjoying the atmosphere and taking pictures. Tibetans are among the nicest people I have ever met and most people I approached with my camera were all smiles.
More Tibetan smiles can be seen in a workshop. Both pictures were scanned from Kodachrome slides.

Such a wonderful portrait full of stunning colours and great clarity. Fully illustrates the warm and simple nature of the Tibetans. I happened to meet many of them during my visit to Gangtok and Pelling. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Gert,
The smile is warm and sincere, the contact is precious and memorable.
I found it interesting to see the details of the skin that shows the intense "tan" from the high elevation and direct sun exposure. The colourful headdress is a visual bonus for this intimate portrait.

this is very pretty portrait and the model has really charming and very natural smile. You captured the warmth of hers very well and the light seems to help to create very beautiful atmosphere. The DOF is perfectly blurred and the face thanks to it is more outstanding. Great colors and sharpness!

this is a wonderful portrait with the girl's warm smiling face well placed diagonally in the frame (although a little abruptly cropped at the low border). A beautiful up close and personal portrait, Gert. Her smiling face lights up the frame, while the multicolored headband adds lovely detail. This is both a really carefully arranged shot and a wonderfully spontaneous one, caught in the middle of a pleasant moment. Beautiful work, and another really successful scan here.

You're capturing well this portrait by a good angle, good focus and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see her smile and the colorful net decoration of overhead. It's good at the contrast between clear front and blurred background. It's so wonderful that they always keep good smiling face included ws. It's interesting where does this( smiling Tibetans) originate.

I have been browsing your Tibetan pictures with much interest. After reading your notes that accompany the photo "Waiting for a Bus" and then these, I feel a sadness despite the smiles. How sad that the Han have such little respect for the Tibetans. But smiles deserve smiles and certainly I find myself smiling back at this young woman. A lovely portrait with perfect dof.

Hello Gert,
I must confess, I am old fashioned, therefore the missing chin bothers me. However, I know it is the fashion nowadays to leave parts of a face out of a portrait. I like the out-of focus background against the crisp portrait.
