Photographer's Note
I have heard the expression "No pain, no gain" so I was pleased that I managed to capture a few worthwhile images of the Lunar Eclipse after spending four cold hours this morning in the company of my camera and tripod in our garden. But I have to admit that by 5 a.m. all I wanted was my bed and so I gave up once the Moon began to escape from the Earth's shadow.
This is a small chronological selection from about 160 images, all taken at 400mm focal length. The first two images here were shot at ISO100 hand held, the rest using a tripod. The images of the "Blood Moon" during totality of the eclipse were all taken at ISO3200 at exposures around 2 to 6 seconds at f/5.6.
A rewarding experience during which I was blessed with wonderfully clear sky. And while the Earth, Sun and Moon will still be around in 2033 for the next "Supermoon" lunar eclipse, I might not be!

Hello John,
All my pictures are failed, I don't know why!
Also with a Canon EOS 5D Mark II, Canon EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM, but with F/8.
I have nothing!
Your pictures are wonderful with the nice combination, the moon was wonderful with the red brown colour.
Also pleasant colours, sharpness and clarity together.
Very well done, TFS.
Best regards,
John.

Hi John. A very fine record of this event beautifully put together. A devoted fan of celestial phenomena who left the warmth of the bed and cam dup with a 'necklace" of gems. Your last sentence reminds us that as transient the eclipse is, so are our lives. Regards and thanks for this lovely chronological record. Klaudio.

Hello John,
You have created a marvellous collage capturing the essence of this rather unusual event. A most imaginative way of presenting it.

Hello John,
This is a very interesting photo (or rather 11) for those of us who preferred to sleep at that time of the night (Stockholm was cloudy anyway). It is rarely so obvious what a hard work that sometimes lies behind interesting pictures. This is a fascinating line-up of moon-shots, all perfectly exposed and neatly presented.
I saw something similar, maybe the same phenomenon, one evening in Ouagadougou in 1982. Children were walking through the city beating on pots and pans and chanting prayers for the moon to return to normal. The traditional religious "emperor" was reported to have gone into a retreat to spend the next few days praying.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hello John
I guessed someone out there was taking these photographs, so I'm glad it was you! I went out to see it too, but only for 10 minutes in my dressing gown. Even with urban light pollution, it was as you say, a beautifully clear night, the sky filled with stars. Stupidly, I couldn't be bothered to get my camera out, not even the new baby Superzoom. Your efforts look extremely professional, and are very well assembled too. I wonder what the time scale from first to last shot was? Excellent work.
Regards
Will

Hi John,
the early bird catches the bloody moon :)
I was too lazy for that although my daughter was actually waking me up last night several times so if I was taking a photo each time I could gather a similar collection :)
Fascination work, I am sure you will have a chance to do it next time too. We could organize a TE meeting around it :)
Did you do the color artificially or it was indeed that bloody?

Hi John
2033 huh? I have plans to retire from my nursing career by 2030 :)
Seems like a long time from now, depending on how you look at it right?
Makes me wonder what the photographic world will be like in 2033! Will TE still be around? haha
Good on ya my friend, it was a long journey for you to get all these shots, must have been hard work, but well worth it.
its fun to see the progression, and most of all I like the Mars look and feel to it.
PS
Did you hear the latest news about Mars fron NASA?
They believe they have found proof of flowing water there during its warmer summer months. It came out as news today or yesterday!
Cheers

Hello John,
I was hoping you would attempt to capture this extraordinary phenomenon, like you've done before. You've done a lovely and thorough work, with lots of patience, excellent settings and great post processing to create this rewarding presentation, an impressive chronicle of the eclipse. I like the definition of the details, the intensity of the moonlight and the effect of the Earth's shadow, everything looks great, congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely evening,
Ourania
