Photographer's Note
Glimpse into the past - something from my memory and from my drawer.
Place - Jσzefa (Joseph's) Street in Kazimierz (medieval Jewish district of Krakow); Wysoka (High) Synagogue (built 1556-1563) with judaistic school (Heder) to the left and the oldest in Europe Stara (Old) Synagogue (built 1495) closing the street.
Year - 1974, summertime; communistic epoch at their best - iron curtain still working. Few papers publishing the same, strictly censored news.
So - if one wished to be well informed - one had to take things into one's hands and had to do observations of the world with one's own eyes, hear to it with one's own ears... And it was quite reasonable thing to do at that very time. There were no hordes of tourists distracting attention, no cacophony of mixed voices all around, no traffic at all...
Those were the times... :))

Very interesting shot, with the nearly empty street and the old man looking out at the people at the end of the street. I like the black & white too, which always seems to have a different quality than digital conversions (maybe it's the film grain). Nice note too. Well done!

Those were the times indeed! ;-) I was very young back then, but still remember. Nice PP work to enhance the atmosphere of suspicion and gloom.

Doskonałe zdjęcie. Jest spojrzenie za siebie. Zapach tamtego czasu. Miałem 4 lata. Smiena. ORWO . Tak, to były czasy! Pozdrowienia i Wesołych Świąt Bożego Narodzenia!

Gdy w tych latach przyjeΏdΏa³em z ma³ego miasteczka do Krakowa, wszystko by³o WIELKIE. Kolorowe i inne. Ina Kazimierz - raczej siκ nie chodzi³o.
AleΏ to dobre zdjκcie, tyle wywo³uje w mnie wspomnieρ.

Ale niestety, jedna klisze tylko nim zrobilam, mocno nieudana, bo nie mialam pojecia o "ustawianiu" aparatu, i nikt mi nie potrafil wytlumaczyc...

That street is absolutely gorgeous, also your PP (a wonder, really !), I like very much the inclusion of the man on the left and the trio at the BG.
I remember that area very well, nice to see it so well presented (ah, the old photos !)

A photographic marvel of a unusual beauty...
Sure, that beauty is sort of a vintage wine quality... Tat perfectly mature, aged splendidly - an old , good school of photography, where lines were lines, the darkies were darkies, and the palette of the greys was sparkling with the million shades of it...!

Witaj, Uwielbiam stare zdjęcia, a to jest fantastyczne. Znakomity tytuł, wieloznaczny. Ten facet nie spogląda chyba w przeszłość, ale my tak. Tyle tu rσżnych szczegσłσw. Maly fiacik - chyba właśnie wtedy sie pokazały i jakie to było wydarzenie! A smiena i ORWO - łza się w oku kręci. Ile ja zdjęć zrobiłam w tym zestawie. Moja smiena to nawet jeszcze bez numeru, znalazłam ją niedawno i leży na biurku jako maskotka. Klisz ORWO już nie mam:)). Jakie puste ulice!
Oglądam czasem moje slajdy z tamtego czasu. Najbardziej mnie zdumiewa mσj wygląd:))

Ojej ale to romantyczne - jakby wyjęte ze starego albumu... ale zaraz, chwileczkę... to faktycznie jest wyjete ze starego albumu. Po raz kolejny potwierdza się stara prawda Po pierwsze fotograf po drugie temat, po trzecie sprzęt ( a może i po czwarte po świetle)

Simply wonderful Teresa. It has an atmosphere straight out cinema, and with something of a painting too, in the sky, something that reminds me of the mood in the De Chirico ones...oniric, yet so so true, whole generations, history at its best and worst...an immense sense of nostalgia and solitude too. Yes, those were the times, thank you for showing them so masterfully in superb b/w. Straight to my heart and in my favs.

Witaj Teresa,
A great photo with a tasty flavour of neo-realism, not only because it is old, B&W, grainy and quite contrasted, but because of the compo and the situation depicted, with the old man sneaking the three people on the back. It entices our imagination to invent stories on what could be passing (probably nothing important :-).
I wonder how the original, which I guess is colour, looks like.
I used much Orwo stuff when I was young and I had no money for the much more expensive Ilfords, Agfas and Kodaks. I didn't dislike the papers and the B&W negative films, although they were quite grainy, but the slides were really lousy, except if we wanted our photos to appear as they were more than 20 years old. :D. I have at least two posts taken with Orwo slides: 1, 2.
