Winter in Haarlem II

Earlier this week, I came home after five days in Edinburgh, but a Christmas photo from the Scottish capital will have to wait till next week. In the meantime I will post this winter photo, which I found in my archives, taken almost one year ago in my hometown Haarlem.

Some information about Haarlem and this photo:
Haarlem is located in the western part of the Netherlands, in between Amsterdam and the North Sea. It's the capital of the province of Noord-Holland and has about 150,000 inhabitants.
One of the prides of the city is de Grote of Sint Bavokerk (Great or Saint Bavo Church), seen here in the background. As well as het Teylers Museum (the building to the left of the church), which is the oldest public museum in the Netherlands (1784). On the left side you can see the drawbridge de Gravestenenbrug, that crosses the river het Spaarne.

Hoi Lars,

Nog niet echt winter, voormij hoeft het ook niet, maar het zou wel even leuk zijn wanneer we de schaatsers kunnen fotograferen. Dit klein beetje ijs is misschien een voorbode naar de echte winter.
Prachtige foto Lars, diepte scherpte en zachte kleuren maken dit beel zo aantrekkelijk.

Bonjour, mon ami Lars,
Encore une bien belle photographie de la ville de Haarlem en pιriode hivernale. Un beau ciel bleu, une belle lumiθre ensoleillιe ιclaboussent bien joliment les faηades des immeubles bordant le canal.
L'eau ne doit pas κtre trθs chaude ΰ voir les plaques gelιes qui flottent ΰ la surface.

Prachtig mooi, Lars. Zo zacht als zijde! Dat dunne laagje ijs doet wonderen in deze schitterende compositie door als een soort katalysator te fungeren. In combinatie met je gekozen perspectief krijgt het licht daardoor een prachtige 17e eeuwse glans die perfect bij deze scenario past. Het is per slot van rekening Haarlem, he! Echt ouderwets en betoverend MOOI, werkelijk een lust voor het oog. CHAPEAUX vriend!!!
Ik wens je nog een fijne avond, de hartelijke groeten uit Amsterdam.

Despite the weak sunlight we can almost feel the cold in this image. The canal looks partially frozen yet there are some subtle reflections adding to the beauty of the scene. The church is huge looking out over the rest of the town. Well done

Hi Lars,

A really enjoy the wintry mood here. Soft light and also rather soft colours. I looks like it around zero or below. I also notice the thin ice on the water. TFS and have a nice evening!

Olα Lars, funny thing, my wife was in Edinburgh last week too...another nice photo of winter in your city. Because of you I can almost recognize every single building if I ever go there ;-) Beautiful soft light that isn't enough to warm us. It must be freezing in there. Nice inclusion of the branches at top left and lovely water textures that almost looks like ice to me, except for the narrow stripe in the back where the reflections are stronger.

The light is sharp and the sky is blue, it is a rather exceptional and beautiful image of the Dutch winter. A good point of view and an adequate framing as well as possible describe architecture and the cold canal. Beautiful and good work.

Hi Lars,

It seems that Haarlem looks as charming in winter as in other seasons.
One can easily imagine nice cold walk along the canal with warm light fondling wonderful cityscape along the bay. Very gentle impression of this city that maybe, just maybe lacks of that eye-catching element that would make it even more noticable.
I fooled in Photoshop a little and made different takes, just to see how it works. Hope you do not mind.

typique des villes nord-ouest de la Hollande, ces canaux et mκme les architectures. On voit qu'il fait trθs froid.
J'ai comme l'impression que la photo penche un peu, mais peut-κtre est-ce une illusion.

Hello Lars,
So, this is the original Haarlem after which New York's Harlem was named. It looks like the canal is partially frozen. I like the light and the reflections from the semi-frozen water.
