Piazza Grande
Piazza Grande is the nerve center and town of Gubbio, which ideally combines the four districts of the city began in 1138, was finished in 1483; from its terrace offers a splendid view over the city and it is facing some of the older buildings of Gubbio.
One of these is represented by the symbol of the city, Palazzo dei Consoli, which dominates the square with its stylish wheels, was born in 1332, but in 1341 the building had reached the upper floor, while the tower will need to wait until 1389 .
The parapet of the Square, which borders the terrace has taken the place of a long portico erected in 1508 and demolished in 1839: in recent years, the sight of this beautiful square has appeared to us perhaps more familiar, thanks to the television series "Don Matteo" , filmed entirely in Gubbio.
In the Palace of the People mistakenly called "Consuls", was located in the medieval Gubbio parliament: the faade, embellished by the portal and the front steps, is divided by pilasters, and adorned with two mullioned windows of great value style, in part higher, however, there are six windows, approached two by two, anticipating the final elegant crenellations.
The Bell Tower is located on the left edge, and welcomes the "bell", and for the people of Gubbio has a special meaning, and currently plays 61 times a year and every time you saw a real ritual bell ringers, are part of the Society of bell ringers, in gray uniforms and red.
Once through the main entrance hall you enter directly into the Major, the Arengo, once a place of assembly of the representatives of Gubbio, with its large circular vault and the many archaeological finds from various eras.
In the Palazzo dei Consoli houses the famous "Tables of Gubbio," witness of the history of the ancient Umbrian population: these are bronze tablets dating between 200 and 70 BC ; In the first 4 and the fifth in the A side are engraved letters of Etruscan influence, while the B side of the fifth and the last two letters of the Latin alphabet are engraved. These boards are an essential support to the study of the Umbrian people, also because it contains the description of the ceremonies mostly religious in character, as if they had never seen both in Latin and greek.
Also in the Palace you can visit the Hall of Ceramics and the Art Gallery.
