Sometimes, we think that all the elements are gathered for a success, but something uncontrollable happens; and, even if it is a little thing, all is spoiled. That would unfair to say that's what has happened to your picture, but in a way, yes. I find the composition excellent, and it benefited of a great timing, with theslhouette of the young girl passing behind, perfectly placed in the frame to provide an interesting contrast with the main subject, all the more that there is a strong oppoition between them... as if the image was suggesting the gap beteen the childhood, already far away (this is blurred in the memory) and the present time, ruled, from now on;, by the oldness. The hat on the man's head also gives to him, somehow, a childish demeanor; which makes an extra link with the child in the background. All this is very well orchestrated, and, even if it is only a coincidence of timing; it is a happy one. The sharpness on the face itself is also excellent. Buuut -and that's what, to my opinion, put a limit to the impact of the photo- the dark shadow down his nose, caused by I don't know what, is so visible and prominent; that it is distracting enough to make us forget the qualities of the portrait. And that's a pity.
I made a WS to show you what I mean. Of course, the proportions are not so good anymore, but it will give an idea of my vision. Congratulations anymway.

this is a great BW portrait .. great compo, beautiful shallow DOF,crispsharpness ... the lines brought out so well ... excellent shot .. love it
