History of Eileen Donan Castle
There was once a hermit on the island, St Donan, and Eileen Donan is "Island of Donan" in Gaelic. There has also been a Pict fort.
The present castle was built on this site by Alexander II in the 13th century to protect against Viking raids, and given to Colin Fitzgerald. The strong keep was defence against all attempts to take the castle, including many raids by the MacDonalds of the Isles
During the first Jacobite rebellion, the owners of the castle, the MacRaes, supported the Old Pretender, and garrisoned a small force of Spanish soldiers here. The castle was pounded into submission in 1719 by four English frigates.
It was left in ruins until 1912, when a Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap decided to re-build his ancestral home. For the next twenty years he restored the castle faithfully, paying great attention to detail. It was opened to the public in 1934, and Col MacRae-Gilstrap lived there for part of the year. It also became the spiritual home of the MacRae clan.

Stephen,
This is a great blue hour shot. Your composition is great using the reflection to add depth and balance to the scene. The lighting and colors are great with excellent sharpness and detail. The bridge leads the eye into the shot nicely.

Hi Stephen,
You must have a strong feminine side, because you know how to make yourself desired... :-P) Whatever you are doing away from TE, it's good to see you back here.
Stephen, what you are presenting here is high class material. I'm an enthusiastic fan of the blue hour and make a lot of them wherever I am, but very rarely do I have this quality of sky, such a rich texture that contributes a lot to the overall splendour of your photo, even more here as it is doubled with the reflection.
Excellent use of the bridge that visually (and literally) leads to the castle, creating a stronger sense of distant perspective. Your composition is flawless, the light is perfectly managed and I appreciate the fact that you didn't wait for the sky to become darker, as you already have a good balance with your light sources, artificial and natural.
I would have been tempted to cloned out these floating debris, as they are few and easily manageable, but you might have a good reason to keep them there or running out of time... :-P)
I have been twice in Scotland, from Glasgow to Inverness and from Edinburgh to Fort William; it's so regrettable that I wasn't interested in photography even 5 years ago... Man, I would like to have these incredible castles and mountains in my gallery, so I will have to go back one day or another; the only positive aspect is that my ears are already adapted to the Scottish accent... :-P)
Cheers!

Hi Stephen
welcome back.
This is a jaw dropping view and a fantastic presentation. I feel always weird commenting on your shots because they are always perfect and no words can add anything to them.
The composition with the bridge is so pretty and reflection is really so colorful and perfect with the small items swimming there in the foreground which is always a good thing to have in a reflection,
Congratulations

What a lovely photo.
Although the light of the lamp is overexposed, it does not "destroy" the beauty of the whole scenery.
Well done

Hi Steve,
Almost impossible to produce something better than the previous one, but have to admit this also looks pretty good in exposure and light, bit it's missing that last punch the other had. Nevertheless a very good composed image...any thoughts about the debris in the water?
Take care,
Henk

There, you see? While this photograph is of your usual excellence, I prefer, personally speaking, the other shot of the same subject, but with the vertical composition. Perhaps they were even taken only minutes apart, but that magic light has gone, and the vertical photo has that counterbalancing touch of green at the bottom that this doesn't have. (Then again, you could be justified in saying, "Yes, and this one has a counterbalancing touch of BLUE at the bottom" :-))) Lynn
