Photographer's Note
Doing a bit of research for this post I learned that Buddhist do not pray to a Creator God as many other religions do. They do what they call devotional meditation practices which can be compared to praying.
Myanmar is a country of 46 million people and approximately 89% of them practice Theravada Buddhism intertwined with local elements and beliefs. Christianity, of which about four-fifths are Protestants and one-fifth Roman Catholics, is practised by 6% of the population and the remaining 4% practices Islam, mainly of Sunni sect. Finally, a very minority of the population practise Hinduism.
This picture was taken in the Shwedagon Pagoda after this one and well into the hight. All visitors are required to remove their shoes and socks before stepping in at any of the entrances. Inside the pagoda the Burmese walk around the stupa on a clockwise way and the non-Burmese and tourists tend to follow the same tradition.

Great shot, I believe the B&W conversion is a good idea, it makes us focus on the details, the movement, and we feel better how much thgis is a "living space". Nice range of grey tones, well balanced! Nice picture!

It was a good decision to convert this to black and white, because I don't think it would have worked in colour. In colour the darkness of the sky would disturb, crying out to be shot earlier when there was colour in the sky to combine with the artificial lighting of the temple, but in black and white the dark sky seems just right.
The composition is good and there's a lot to enjoy in this image.

Um templo muito bonito, com estas torres trabalhadas com muita arte e o que chama mais a atenção é a postura das pessoas, este ar solene das Igrejas, que só é quebrado pelos turistas. Gosto do P&B aqui, pois ressalta as formas arquitetônicas.

Hello Antonio.
I really like your decision to convert this shot to B&W. The contrast is amazing and really highlights the details of this wonderful building. I notice the young woman dressed in mostly black near the right of the photo...my eye is drawn to her. The absolute sharpness of this girl coupled with the slightly pious way in which she stands helps her become the focus of this shot for me.

A nitidez não é das melhores, mas atendendo às circunstâncias está muito boa mesmo. Não me refiro ao tremido do movimento, esse não me incomoda e até fica muito bem.

É muito raro ver-se um nocturno a p&b e este teu está muito bom António. As tonalidades estão excelentes e esta conversão por si só já merecia um sorriso bem verdinho! A exposição é muito boa e a tua composição também. No meio de uma confusa arquitectura conseguiste dar algum espaço para respirar aqui no lado direito o que resulta muit bem. Muito boa.

É por isso que me sinto muito mais atraído pelo o Oriental e budismo em particular do que pelo cristianismo, mesmo sendo agnóstico. A meditação é sem dúvida aquilo que se aproxima mais de uma religião dentro de mim.
Este preto e branco está incrível! Tenho que deixar de ser preguiçoso e ir lá aos sites do Luís...A perspectiva é muito boa e a arquitectura é uma delícia. Não sei o que é isto a cores, mas a tua conversão é mesmo muito boa. A atmosfera é muito fixe. Gosto muito!

Interesting BW setting in this golden plaza! (probably look great in colour too) But what I like about this BW setting is the lights provides very good contrast and the details of the people are not distracted by the pagodas as they'd hv done in colour. so this is a very fine work again. (might also be interesting if you can upload colour in WS). good documentary!

Hi Antonio, yes 'in search of nirvana' we are all running after it ;) you did well here with a BW try, original approach, i pretty like it, you seem to have an excellent lens as i see the light in upper left corner resulting in not that much shutter lens speed (1/3 sec)

Um nocturno a preto e branco...para mim é um desafio ainda mairo do que a tradicional cor...porque aqui o contraste é mais difícil de manusear...facilmente se derrapa para brancos "derrapados" e sem textura.
mas tu portaste-te muito bem.

Espero que esteja tudo bem consigo e sua família, sinceramente quando vi esta foto sua estava a ouvir um som com ritmos do oriente e tem um gosto especial, seria bom colocar som nas fotos, talvez um dia isso vai ser possível, impressionante como o focus é realmente melhor nos lugares certos, não sei como faz isso, mas na minha opinião existem muitos "spots" na foto com um focus muito melhor do que o resto da foto, o que torna ela muito dinâmica e apreciável.

António, esse lugar me parece deslumbrante e eu não me havia dado conta disso antes de ver suas fotos e a de outros companheiros aqui no TE! Essa foto, especificamente, é muito interessante, pois mostra uma cena que me parece cotidiana, com gente orando, visitando ou, imagino, simplesmente caminhando em meio a essas preciosidades. I think I prefer this place in b/w. The details stand out better for me, and thers less distraction from colors, thereby allowing us to focus more on the people and the life instead of being drawn to golden domes.

The B7W is good choice for emphasizing the devotional meditators. There is a real sense of peace about your photo. I think I would be Bhuddist if I were to practise any religion.

Hi Antonio,
I was a month in burma during the winter of 2006/2007 but you know, I never did see the Shwedagon Pagoda!? There was so much to see and do that I always put it off until later saying to myself that I could always go there just before I have to leave -- but of course I didnt ;(
I am thinking of going back this winter and after viewing your photo I will be sure to go straight away to the pagoda!
I just sent you an email Antonio asking for any advice you might have on current travel conditions in burma, thanks in advance if you can help in anyway!
