Photographer's Note
We are having some wonderful warm sunny weather in Scotland and what better way to spend it yesterday than to go for an 80 mile trip in my little old car around the lovely Scottish Borders. And when I came across this old AA Sentry Box, I couldn't resist stopping for a photograph.
The Automobile Association was formed in 1905 in an effort to protect motorists in Britain from some very repressive restrictions, one of which was the imposed regulation that motor vehicles should be restricted to a maximum speed of four miles per hour and be preceded at all times by a man carrying a red flag! Efforts by the AA managed to relieve such oppressive regulations and the assocation later developed its breakdown service whereby AA patrolmen toured the country on motorcycles, and later vans, equipped with tools to enable emergency roadside repairs.
The first AA "Sentry Box" was built in 1911, initially as a stop-over point for patrolmen but later more and more sprung up, there being at one time over a thousand such boxes throughout the country. The boxes were each equipped with a telephone and all AA members were given a key to access the boxes and so be able to call for help free of charge.
However, the introduction of mobile 'phones has now rendered the AA Sentry Box obsolete and now only about a dozen still exist throughout Britain. You can see a list of their locations here. This one, near St. Mary's Loch in the Scottish Borders, is now a category "B" listed building as you can see here.
You can see the location if you click on Map:view but you can also take a virtual drive past it if you look at this map and drag the yellow man down to the red cross and pan around.
Thankfully, I didn't need to call on the services of the AA yesterday - my little car completed her journey with no problems at all!
P.S. I thought I might just add this to the theme "Telephone Kiosks" set up recently by Bev (Royaldevon).

Hello John - Fantastic, I had no idea that any of these old boxes still existed. Actually, I had not really noticed their disappearance but I like the idea of preserving some. A little bit of motoring history. A fine shot with a touch of nostalgia. What is the age of the box in relation to your car? They look like a match made in Dr Finlay's Case Book which I think was set in the 1920'- 30's. Warm regards Rosemary

Hello John,
a lovely composition with an elegant diagonal and the two main elements very well placed in the frame. Clarity, lighting and colours are superb. Your little friend looks beautiful, she brightens up the surroundings and the picture. Well done and thank you!

hello John,
You have a bit of timeslip action going on here! What a good idea to photograph the AA box in the company of your lovely car.Nicely photographed with good techinical quality and a nice light.
I followed your link and was sure there was an AA box on the A93, somewhere between Braemar and Aboyne (can't decide whether it is east or west of Ballatar, but must be mistaken. There is certainly a box on the road though. Could it be RAC? Must check.
Have lovely weekend and enjoy the summer while it is here.

Hi John,
This is brimming with nostalgia! Do you remember that the AA patrolmen used to salute if your car had an AA badge. My dad was a member and as a child I was always fascinated by this. Your lovely old large looks magnificent in this photo and seems quite at home next to this old box. Not sure it would get a TE group inside it in quite the same way that Richard's vehicle can! A super sharp image - excellent work.
Best wishes, Ann

Hi John
this is nostalgic magic. So beautifully captured with immaculate detail and light that also gives the atmosphere of earlier times. They do not make them like this any more, and I am impressed at the condition of your wonderful little Austin! Superb!
Enjoy your weekend - Brian.

Hello John,
What a beautiful picture with these old car as subject.
I remember the emblem of the Automobile Association when 60 year ago tourists came out of England and Schotland to Belgium, a yellow emblem.
Splendid taken with the small house of the AA.
Excellent composition, pleasant colors too.
Very well done, TFS.
Have a nice Saturday,
John.

Hi John
That was probably one of the best notes that accompanied a photo in a long time!
A++ for that note, it gives me everything i need to know as a viewer of the scene.
and as for that scene, how could anyone not love that car! You drove it for 80miles, so i have a question for you....it seems that you do DRIVE it, as the car doesnt just sit in your garage as an antique, so where do you go to get new tires for this olden goldy?
Love the story, love the photo, love the AA box.
AA++
PS
I got your emails, I just havn't had the time to try out the links yet - I'll let you know.
thanks again

Hi John,
Very nice photo of this "old world"! I find the strength of the sunshine more atypical than the old AA box.
Strong midday sunlight is never too interesting but you have exposed it really will and the shadows helps as well. Copositionally it is superb, I am not sure of the saturation, the colour of the grass look more mediteranean than from Scottland.
Thanks for sharing

Caro Giovanni
Third time lucky! This is the third time I've written a critique for this photo but the system hasn't let me record it. Fingers crossed. So you took your beautiful old car out for a run in the sun eh? What a lovely day it looks to have been, and good on you for spotting this decisive moment along the roadway. Many of us would have just passed this by or taken a photo just of the sentry box. But your patience and good eye have paid off here with the two making a winning combination.
Warm regards, un abbraccio

Hi Joh n, Fantastic post with such an in teresting note. This wonderful old lady of your.. It is such a pity you left here at home when we went to Lake District last year. I would love to sit in a it for a while. But maybe there were no this sentry boxes by the road. I have read about this rule with red flag. I can't imagine it. Four miles an hour it is fast for a man running with flag, and to go by bike with flag is also rather difficult. And from were to take all these men? Funny. Interesting to see this father of the emergency roadside telephones. And the box looks a bit similar like Toi Toi.

Good Morning John,
I'm so pleased that you have been able to find another interesting telephone box. I must say, along with your 'period' car, it looks just right! A sepia treatment could have convinced many of its antiquity!
A very well composed shot, with the strong f/g triangle, mirrored by the triangle of the sky. Excellent sharpness and colour saturation.
Have a lovely day,
Bev :-)

You couldn't have picked a better location to park the Austin alongside. I can recall when AA and RAC sentry boxes where commonplace throughout the country. Although no longer required for their original functional purpose its nice to know that a few have been retained for nostalgia.
A fine tribute to motoring history.

John,
This could be a convincingly old picture, if it were not for the modern electrical connection on the telegraph pole, and the fact that is simply TOO GOOD ! A contemporary picture would not be half so clear as this. ( And, maybe for the purists amongst us, I dare say the tax disc is not convincing either ! )
This is a lovely set of natural colours, trademark thoughtful composition and the perfect light, which with the powerful combination of 'good tool and competent operator' has given us a glass like sheen I aspire too. It comes right for me sometimes, but not as often as I would like,
On which point, I might say, if you want to improve your photography, buy an Apple Imac. The screen is a real boon. If you want to go yet further, try an Ipad. Every photo comes out a winner. The effect is extraordinary ! ( I suppose it is still a case of rubbish in, rubbish out, but with a half decent input, the Ipad does the rest. 'They' speak well of its retinal resolution, I can only say whatever it is, it works !
Btw, this picture reminds me there is another AA box near here, near Hawes in fact, which does not appear on your linked list. I must address that at some point.

Hello John!
I love these old English cars :-)
The setting of the border, especially I like :-) I look forward to come to the booth behind a skirt guard and Hercule Poirot, who, as we know, was not English :-)
Excellent theme, the perfect solution. The brown tone is sweet, old-fashioned charm of an image. It's like an old, yellowed photo brochure.
Have a nice day.
