Photographer's Note

Tropical almond (Terminalia catappa) is a large, spreading tree now distributed throughout the tropics in coastal environments.
The tree is tolerant of strong winds, salt spray,and moderately high salinity in the root zone. It grows principally in freely drained, well aerated, sandy soils.
The species has traditionally been very important for coastal communities, providing a wide range of non-wood products and services. It has a spreading, fibrous root system and plays a vital role in coastline stabilization. It is widely planted throughout the tropics, especially along sandy seashores,for shade, ornamental purposes, and edible nuts.
The timber makes a useful and decorative general purpose hardwood and is well suited for conversion into furniture and interior building timbers. Fruits are produced from about 3 years of age, and the nutritious, tasty seed kernels may be eaten immediately after extraction.
It's amazing to see how resistant the specimen is... here under seawater...

Tem a copa bastante larga, fornecendo bastante sombra. Possui folhas caducas.
Ι cultivada como αrvore ornamental. Os seus frutos sγo comestνveis, embora sejam um pouco αcidos.
A sua madeira ι vermelha, sσlida e resistente ΰ αgua, tendo sido utilizada para fazer canoas na antiga Polinιsia.

Este espιcimen encontra-se a cerca de 50 metros a Noroeste Forte de Sγo Sebastiγo na cidade e ilha de Sγo Tomι, em Sγo Tomι e Prνncipe.

Unbelievable loneliness and strength!
Well framed with a great depth in image.
There is a little noise on the sky, perhaps owing to over-saturated colour.

A beautifull tree, stangely planted on the beach with the sea splashing around it. Good view on the sea in the background, an this makes a much more ecological image compared to the plastic boat of your previous view.

I was drawn to this image by the unusualness of the tree being lapped by the sea. It must be very hardy to withstand these conditions. You have framed the image well placing the tree on the right while the rocks provide balance. Good timing to catch the splash of the wave.

Uma foto magnνfica, muito bem composta, com uma luz quente maravilhosa e com umas cores a darem-lhe uma ar de foto antiga muito agradαvel e adequado ao que mostra. Gosto do equilνbrio entre o monte de pedras e a αrvore e da espuma no chγo. A solidγo daquela αrvore contra o mar tem algo de quase humano e muito nostαlgico.

Ι realmente impressionante com essas αrvores sγo tγo resistentes ΰ αgua salgada.

Hi Rui,

This shot was in your random photos and immediately caught my eye. It is an interesting biological shot - with a large tree growing that close to the sea: but as with all your photos it is more than just an interesting view - your treatment of the subject produces works of art, rather than just informative shots. great composition beautiful use of colour and contrast. WoW, what a delicious almond tree it is!!!
Never 've seen a fruit tree growing so close to a salty sea edge. The leaves though look pretty healthy, the climate must really suit this kind of plant.
