Photographer's Note

We were shooting a woman's project/cooperative in the northern city of Ruhengeri in Rwanda over Christmas. The main purpose of this is to be able to display a series of photos of women at work in Rwanda for International Women's Day, with the help of the Canadian High Commission.

Whats an interesting feature of donor aid to Rwanda is that the donor countries are stoping supporting men in the agricultural field and have opted to work with women more and train them. They are choosing to do this not for gender equality but rather because women are the more sound investment. For one reason or another, some blame it on "the war", men tend to drink their revenue away, while women invest, spend in on supporting their families and more importantly their children for future generations.

Notice I said "the war". It is very interesting how they refer to the genocide as "the war". Also interesting is that we were in what Romeo Dallaire (Canadian General of the UN Peace Keeping mission was ultimatly failed due to the bureaucracy of the UN) and others call "the hutu stronghold" in the north - Ruhengeri. Elsewhere in the country, driving on the main roads you will see signs denoting one memorial or another - so much so you almost become used to driving by these sites that hold anything from 1 000 to 50 000 people. However, in an effort to curb "genocide mentality" the government has set up dozens, if not hundreds of signs in the above mentioned region saying things along the lines of "we will never forget","lets work for peace together" and so on.

Our initial reaction to a fly is to shoo it away, although man here have simply adjusted and see flies as a part of daily life. I love the look in the girl's eyes right at the camera, seemingly ignorant of the fly on her nose.

Anyways, drop a line and let me know what you think or how to improve, also if you have any stories from Africa!
