We were out covering a womens cooperative in northern Rwanda when I shot this. After having taking the photos I wanted of the project, I moved outside to get a shot of everyone at the window looking in to the other photographer. Obviously that is not the case as they were watching me too. I then chose to walk around the area and into an abandoned mud house. Sure enough, 5 kids followed me into the house which offered almost perfect lighting on their faces. Overall they were very excited to be getting photos taken of them and then to see them on the screen. There was the one boy in the back who was very hesitant about the photos but intrigues nonetheless.

I really think their eyes captures themselves and their perception of the camera almost perfectly. The only editing I have done on this picture is converting it to BW and burning the edges in Adobe Lightroom.

This was my first time using the 40D for something other than sports and I was very pleased with the outcome.

Following the genocide, many kids were left as orphans, while others just came into the world from victims of rape. Many families have taken on their kids' friends and those of neighbors, even in some cases complete strangers. Because they are primarily agriculturalists, the more children the better. Unfortunately it it now getting out of control as Africa's most densely populated nation in which you can travel East to West in 5 hours, as well as North to South.
