Photographer's Note

In Morocco there are many young children who are busy trying to sell you various items ranging from arabic crossword puzzles, gum, candy & cookies, doughnuts, even cigarettes. Some will even shine your shoes. Usually these kids sell things to earn themselves some pocket money.

This really cute little girl we met in Safi by the beach was selling a number of sweets, as you can see. Noticing I was a foreigner she tried to speak to me in French and was really excited when I tried to reply in Arabic.

When we were leaving she asked us to buy something from her. Since we had spent our last bits of change buying something from another young child right before her, we reached in our pocket and found only a 10 centimes coin. Upon giving it to her she replied "THATS IT???" I found out later that we gave her the equivilant of about 1 penny!! Yikes!

I should mention that it is NOT a cigarette in her mouth, altho many people have asked me if it is, she is only sampling her own sweets.....
