Dodo
Mauritius was the only known habitat of the extinct Dodo bird
When it was discovered, the island of Mauritius was the home of a previously unknown species of bird, which the Portuguese named the dodo (simpleton), as they appeared to be not too bright. Dodos were descendents of a type of pigeon which settled in Mauritius over 4 million years ago. With no predators to attack them, they lost their need and ability to fly. They lived and nested on the ground and ate fruits that had fallen from trees. There were no mammals on the island and a high diversity of bird species lived in the dense forests.
In 1505, the Portuguese became the first humans to set foot on Mauritius. The island quickly became a stopover for ships engaged in the spice trade. Weighing up to 50 pounds, the dodo was a welcome source of fresh meat for the sailors. Large numbers of dodos were killed for food.
Later, when the Dutch used the island as a penal colony, domesticated animals were brought to the island along with the convicts. Many of the ships that came to Mauritius also had rats aboard, some of which escaped onto the island. Before humans and other mammals arrived the dodo had little to fear from predators. The rats, pigs and monkeys ate dodo eggs in the ground nests.
The combination of human exploitation and introduced species significantly reduced the dodo population. Within 100 years of the arrival of humans on Mauritius, the once abundant dodo became a rare bird. The last one was killed in 1681.
The dodo is prominently featured as a supporter of the national Coat of arms of Mauritius.

Hello Maria,
An amazing photo that takes its power from its simplicity. I liked your idea of dividing the entire frame into two halves, one for the crystal clear turquoise sea and the other to the deep blue sky with abundant clouds. Both of the halves are equally impressive and beautiful. Besides, the tiny boats seen just in the merging point of horizon adds a great depth, value and interest to the scenery. Καλησπέρα Μαρία,
μαγευτική φωτογραφία με εξαιρετική καθαρότητα και φως. Φαίνεται μια απλή σύνθεση αποτελούμενη από δύο μέρη, θάλασσα και ουρανό, αλλά το καθένα από τα δύο μέρη είναι συναρπαστικό λόγω των υφών και των πάρα πολλών αποχρώσεων που το συνθέτουν. Μου αρέσει πάρα πολύ η αντίθεση ανάμεσα στα δύο, η ηρεμία και λάμψη της θάλασσας και ο δυναμισμός και η κίνηση του ουρανού. Μπράβο και ευχαριστώ!

one of the best i've read in a long time.
Very interesting how the bird just lost its way due to human presence and other animals - too bad the bird lost its ability to fly, how ironic.
love the photo too, nothing can make me want to dip into the ocean more than this scene, looks very peaceful and warm.

Μαρία γεια σου,
όμορφο σκηνικό με τα καθαρά νερά της περιοχής να σε προκαλούν να κάνεις μια βουτιά για να τα απολαύσεις.
Μπορεί να νερά να είναι καθαρά και ελκυστικά αλλά νομίζω ότι στην Ελλάδα υπάρχουν ισάξιες και ίσως και καλύτερες θάλασσες.
