Photographer's Note

"My boat is broken." That 's what he told me this guy on the beach. "I need some money to fix it." Actually the boat he was on the beach for years, and this was one of the many techniques used by locals to move tourists and raise soemthing. I remember the many children who wanted money to buy a ball after making a list of Italian football players to create friendship, or the hotel waiter who lived far away and needed a bike .....

LA MIA BARCA SI E' ROTTA

"La mia barca si θ rotta". E' quello che mi ha detto questo ragazzo sulla spiaggia."Ho bisogno di qualche soldino per ripararla". In realta' la barca se ne stava sulla spiaggia da anni,e questa era una delle tante tecniche usate dai locali per commuovere i turisti e racimolare qualcosa.Tra le tante mi ricordo i bambini che volevano soldi per comprarsi un pallone dopo averci fatto una lista di giocatori italiani per creare amicizia,o il cameriere dell'albergo che abitava distante e aveva bisogno di una bicicletta...ehhee...ogni mondo θ paese....

la composizione e l' inquadrattura di questo ritratto sono ottime. La diagonale della barca e' piazzata perfettamente sulla diagonale del quadro e porta il ragazzo al centro a guardarci intensamente con la sua richiesta. Mi piace tantissimo il contrasto fra il nitidissimo primo piano e lo sfondo sfocato e di tonalita' simili a quelle del primo piano ma molto scolorate.La sabbia luminosa mette un calore piacevole. Complimenti e grazie!

Hello Luciano,
If you don't have any money and the tourists have a lot, what else can you do?
This is half portrait, half street-shot (although on the beach). I enjoy how you have arranged the photo on two levels, with the man and his boat partly shaded and just slightly underexposed, and tha background hazy and blurred and denched by the burning sun. You have lifted the man out of the background very cleverly.

excellent portrait, the guy is perfectly positioned and the blurred background is nice seen here. the model is natural.
yes, in some countries this kind of situation is usual, I remember a little boy in cuzco- peru that told me about the soccer, capital and president of brazil and after asked me for money or a Brazilian coin to its school collection.

hai ragione: anche a me ogni tanto capita di incontrare qualcuno che si θ dimenticato il portafoglio a casa e non ha i soldi per tornarci. L'ultimo due giorni fa ed aveva un cellulare modernissimo.....
Andando alla foto la messa a fuoco selettiva, ma soprattutto la diversa luminositΰ del soggetto e dello sfondo stanno molto bene insieme e aiutano a creare una composizione eccellente per luci e colori.
Un ottimo risultato!

Your story is not unusual in countries where there is not much work or what there is is poorly paid. At least, they try to come up with a plausible story rather than simply begging. Whatever, this is a fine portrait of this man with 'his' boat. You ave lifted the subject form the background very well to successfully make him the star of the show.

I think it is mostly the same in many touristic places.
Some people will always try to get some money from the non-locals with sad stories. Anyway I like how you divide the photo in 2 sections. In the front we could see bright colors and clear details with a strong story. And in the hazed probably another story is going on. Well done!

nice portrait of this man and a part of his broken boat. the tropical setting is very well added to your photo. i like how he is centered in the composition. you should have looked quite rich to him. people usually ask for money to go and buy something to eat. he wants your money to fix the boat, lol :))

yes,every way to get some money is good:)tourists are often taken in by such attempts.Your note works really well with the scene we get to see.And you captured it excellently.The timing and framing seems to be perfect.What I like more about it is the clear border between FG and BG(which is so nicely blurred).
Expressive in its perception picture with interesting note!You did a great job here my friend!

Your photos from Gambia are great. I like the composition of this shot, with the man hanging off the boat in the foreground. He and the boat are clearly the subjects of the photo, but in the background we also find an interesting scene: a hazy view of tropical trees, and people walking on the sand. Very nice!

Very cool shot. Not an easy one, the air seem hazy, but you manage very well and I like the daily life quality of it. Not just a touristy type landscape photo. People try what they can to make a living, the easy way :) In many part of Asia, they want to sell you things instead of coming up with such stories.

This is an excellent photo. I like your composition. Although I don't like to place my subjects right in the center of a photo, that worked very well in this case. I love the blurred background shrouded in mystery, presumably from the dust over the beach.

Wonderful elements, light, and colors Luciano. I like the story, too. I was wondering if the subject could have been placed somewhere else in the frame. At first glance he is near the center line, but I am not sure because you already have 1/3s here -- the boat, the man, and the beach.

Ciao Luciano. Ah, the dilemma faced by the young in countries where life doesn't offer much. To risk life and limb and try to cross into Europe or to eek an existence while surrounded by poverty? So if he can get some money by telling fibs, he can put food on the table for his aging mother. i am sure he doesn't feel good about it- an able bodied, fit man like him. Technically it is a top job, great work Luciano. the light is special so that the background becomes diffused while he and the boat have a strong presence.Great colours and sharpness of the subject. Ah, Luciano, more of these wonderful Gambia portraits please! This one is wonderful, with the man standing out brilliantly against the BG haze. The boat is a wonderful element, leading us right to him in the frame - a great example of how to break the thirds rule effectively with your subject right in the center but with imbalance and leading lines giving it dynamism nonetheless. Nicely done here!
