Photographer's Note

This Hamar lady patiently posed for me in the bustle of the weekly tribal market at Turmi. Her leather/metal necklace reveals she is her husband's first wife, and her other jewelry tells her family is in good standing. She opted for a full traditional leather dress over a "doctors for Africa" t-shirt, although nowadays many Hamar women wear only leather skirts, complemented by a simple western t-shirt - like the woman crossing the street in the blurred background of my photo.
The village market itself was quire interesting, but of course, many sellers already expect tourists who are not visiting villages directly to buy their goods here, so negotiating skills are a plus. The selection of wares is still quite authentic and one can find very original items that local people use in daily life - animal hair milk containers were an interesting find for me. One seller, however, was selling only the "first wife necklaces" like the top one this lady is wearing, and I saw a tourist buy no fewer than three !? It is curious that such an item would even be considered a souvenir, given that it has a very traditional significance of marking the first wife - Hamar men lock their necks on the spot - the leather is secured with fused metal rings and it can only be removed if cut. I wonder what this tourist plans to do with them...
