Photographer's Note
Boulangerie de-la-Place, the Bakery at the Square.
This is from Timimoun, for very clear reasons known as "The red oasis". It is situated approximately 1000 km southwest of the Algerian capital Algiers, several hours' journey through the Sahara from the nearest place that could reasonably be called a town.
This is another photo from a journey I made to Algeria in September and October 1975. At this time of the day the bakery may have been open, and it may have been closed. This was during Ramadan, the month of fasting, so no food was consumed between sunrise and sunset, and very little was available in the shops or markets. I don't know if eating, drinking or smoking was forbidden by law, probably not, but the social pressure was very strong. The rules didn't apply to me, as a non-Muslim, but I always felt a bit embarrassed drinking water even during bus-rides of maybe 5-8 hours.
As always with my pre-digital pictures this is a scan of a Kodacrome slide. I have used the larger format of 1500 pixels.

Oh wow, what colors!
The strong ochre is reminiscent of Morocco as well.
And the photo is 4 years older than me, respect for the quality of scan.
With each travel and such nice photos, Africa is growing more and more in my mind...

Hej Gert,
This time a much more traditional looking view from Algeria. Red soil match perfectly with the walls of same colour. Blue doors of course add good contrast. Palms at the background catch attention too.

Hello dear Gert,
Also this "oldie" is more than topclass !
And it's the reason why I still keep my analogue cameras and enjoy from time to time to put a film in and start shooting.
It's not easy to say what the difference is but there is for shure a difference between digital and analogue.
And this entry is a perfect sample for it !
TFS and best regards

Hej, Gert, good August evening,
I just impressed by this quality... Superb! Yes, this is not Ixus, for example. Long live Kodachrome! Unfortunately, I know this production.
Your photo reminds me "La Peste" of A. Camus.
Best wishes from cool rainy Ural,

Fabulous colour here Gert, the rusty red is so rich, add in the blue and green and you have a really good contrast of colours. Impressive scan and pin sharp. Your shot looks as if it could have been taken yesterday - timeless and a simple but lovely DL scene.

Hi Gert,
Incredible quality after so many years. I am envious, as all my slides are to the bin. and specially with the big format now we can enjoy it in full. Amazing strong colours - red walls, green palm and blue sky. Strange this bakery with no windows. Charming sign in Ara bic and french and also drawing.

Hello, Gert!
It must be a very interesting place, although not much touristic, and a really different culture! The picture is wonderful with these strong colors, giving us the idea of a really hot place! Beautiful job!

Hello Gert,
I like very much how you have placed this red wall across the frame having the viewer wondering what lies behind it. The blue doors, both the closed and the open one, are eye-catching and mysterious. The simple structure of the composition and the colour palette limited to four colours make the description of this place so effective. The man hurrying decisively away from the doors is a captivating representative of the local people. His attitude extends the context beyond the limits of the frame, which he will be leaving in a moment. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,
Ourania

Hej Gert,
Men detta är ju en mycket bra bild, väl komponerad och med starka färger i bra harmoni med varandra. Det ser ut som om den röda väggfärgen har missfärgat den vita dörrposten, genom klåfingriga handavtryck?

Hi Gert
A strong eye puller and effective play of strong shapes, textures and striking colors to greatest impact to attract attention. The dwellers certainly brightened up the oasis town so well and you have captured this riot of color beautifully, and the man is there to make happening. As usual your handling of light is always second to none. A very gaily shot from the remote desert and tkhs for sharing, Congrats.

Hola gert
Wow how can this be an scanned photo, so saturated colors, so good definition and contrast
Anyway a top capture and composition, with plenty of detail to admire, seems like it has been taken today, still few changes may have happen over there, may be La Place exist and is still selling bread
Informative note
Congrats and TFS

Hi Gert
you see Gert, this...THIS is the type of 'people' photo I enjoy taking.
Here i totally, completely, 100% see the benefit of having people in the scene. Having someone walk into the scene here doesn't bother me a bit (it did before, but i'm adapting), i'm all for it, and the photo is better for it too.
and again, i wonder how this scene would look today, nealy 40 years later! that would be so fun to find out! but it sounds like its a disaster trying to even get to this location.
so what made you want to venture out to this small town/village? did you know about it, or was it an un-expected visit. was there a purpose or motive?
love everthing about this scene. heck, even the ground dirt looks like the red walls and doors!
everything looks like its red clay colored.
and obviously the blue door with white trim stands out smartly because of it.
wicked shot!!!! Just looking at it brings about 10 questions to mind immediately
cheers

Hello Gert,
what a stunning shot, the combination of the Kodacrome slide and larger format has come up trumps.
The vibrant colours just leap off the screen whilst the man in traditional garb is well placed in the frame to add both interest and scale.
Very fine photography.

Hello Gert,
You're capturing well this place by a good composition and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the road with red heat, the outer wall with deep red, blue door, and coconuts trees in back. It's strong primary colors. So, I can image that this is the tropical area. And, the residents walking the road draws out an additional good effect inthe image.
Kind regards,

Ciao Gert
Ciao e buona serata

Hello Gert,
I was immediately attracted to the colours here. A terracotta red and blue can't help but be a winning combination. It seems to have lost nothing in the scanning judging by its sharpness. I like too that there is some human interest and even he is colour co-ordinated.

Hello Gert
Your scans are always of the highest quality & unless you make a specific mention, its hard not to imagine that its not a digital picture
Fine picture of teh bakery which is painted red in colour. The blue door stands out, almost jumps out from the red surrounds. The walking or scurrying man is a great addition. Fine work!

Godmorgen Gert
Pragtfuldt foto, Gert.

Hello Gert,
Today shown on TE's homepage under the theme 'Featured Destination: Adrar, Algeria'.
I already heard about 'Timimoun, the red oasis'. It's absolutely true as far as the walls of this bakery are concerned.
Splendid with the blue doors in the lower left half of the photo, nicely in balance with the blue sky in the upper right corner.
The man is placed in the most suitable spot in the picture.
Best regards, Paul
