Photographer's Note
In 1974 we travelled through the Sahara by public transport. We got as far as Tamanrasset (2000kms south of Algiers) by a 6WD Mercedes bus but then we had to wait there for a week until fuel supplies arrived.
During that week it rained, according to the locals, for the first time for 7 years. Everyone went down to the river to experience this rare event.
This is a scan from a kodachrome slide.

1974! The year I first made my international solo travel from Singapore to London to Newfoundland!
Of course for Malaysians, rain is just ordinary, but in the Sahara, the rain is a precious gift from nature and the nicely captured view here of people coming out to be in the wet. I cannot imagine my days with no rain in 7 years, not possible.

Hello Marlene,
I guess this photo could also have been categorized as "decisive moment" and "event". This is a remarkable scene, being in the very centre of the Sahara. People seem to be thrilled and puzzled at the same time.

Hello Marlene,
first of all, I must say that it's a very good composition, with the man dressed in blue clothes, in the very centre; first he attracts attention, along with the shining streams of water on the ground... and then the look goes to other parts of the picture. These peoples' behaviour really seems a bit strange (after 7 years of no rain!); but I agree: perhaps they were too puzzled, as if not believing their own eyes!

good time when terrorism wasn't so terrible in africa like nowadays. Very nice photo, the informative note is good too. I can imagine how special was these days for taht people, in a region where rain is a not usual thing
