Photographer's Note
Now I take another step back in time, to December 1981. This is from a market place in Tamanrasset (or Tamanghasset), the last major settlement in southern Algeria on the way towards Niger.
In 1981 this was where public transports ended, although a new road continued a few kilometers further south. To proceed across the Sahara I had to find a truck-driver who was willing to give me a ride. It was quite easily done, but I had to pay roughly the equivalent of a bus ticket for the same distance. Food and water was included in the price.
I spent a couple of days in Tamanrasset, one of the major towns of the Sahara and a meeting-place for people of many nationalities and ethnic groups.
This photo was scanned from a Kodachrome slide.
Here is a larger version.

One more of a remote place that you had visited more than 20 years ago, gert, something I am not sure so easy to tour freely nowadays.
Your description and the vivid picture are marvelous jurnalist work posted. Men only, but a vivid scene.

Ha! Ha! Gert,
I wouldn't imagine that you had a big choice of menu on your journey!
This is a fascinating scene!
There is such a mixture of items on sale and no sense of order; or, maybe, I just can't see it!
These 'shops' have no overheads!
There is also, a great mixture of ethnic groups and dress styles. How wonderfully cosmopolitan!
Is there a lot of bartering or are the goods priced?
And, with so many different peoples, what is the common language. It fascinates me!
A fine, colourful shot, capturing the busy mood of this marketplace.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Gert
A shot with traders of all sorts, hive of activity and so much going on that really holds the interest with a bit of everything which tells a story. The angle on this shows more of the activity in the background and the mixing metaphors makes great moments!! Lovely street life, Congrats and tfs.
Best regards

Hello Gert,
This is a very busy and colourful image but perfectly captures the scene at this Algerian marketplace. Lots of interesting and colourful goods and produce to examine as well as the interactions between the number of different people crowded into this space.
A wonderful snapshot of life here thirty-five years ago but perhaps not quite so pleasant or safe to visit nowadays. And, once again, a fascinating note and an excellent quality scanned Kodachrome slide.
Excellent!
Kind Regards,
John.

Hello Gert,
I don't know but I think that today maybe not is other.
The maghreb countries are not much changed during the last twenty years.
The picture is taken in all serenity, calmness and clarity.
A nice composition and pleasant colours.
Also a wonderful panorama view about the area.
Very well done, TFS.
Have a nice day,
John.

Bonjour Gert,
Une très belle photo tirée de tes archives de l'année 1981. Une très bonne numérisation d'image sur un très beau sujet qu'est le marché dans les pays du Maghreb. Intéressant de voir que tout se passe au niveau du sol.

Hello Gert,
I've always heard the name Tamanrasset. Never Tamanghasset. Is this how it is pronounced?
This street market offers a wide variety of products. A colourful shot full of local flavor. I guess now they will be selling smartphones and tablets.
An intriguing ocher building on the background.
Here nobody seems to notice your presence.
Excellent clarity and sharpness.
In what place did you arrive after the trip of four days?
Best regards, Paul

Hello Gert,
I like this picture very much, the vertical frame is full of people, a busy scene and everyone in it seems to be there for a purpose. The scene has intensity but also balance, the people seem to respect the rituals of trading and bargaining, it's exciting to think of characters and stories while observing them. The light and the colours are great, they add to the vividness and allure of the scene. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,
Ourania

Hej Gert,
Crossing Sahara, sounds like quite an adventure. And being on the last outpost before the vast desert is special. Busy place where people seem to exchange various, not so luxury goods.
I like the texture of the background wall.

come scrivi nella nota, qui si vedono molte persone di origini diverse, i mercati poi sono il luogo ideale per incontri e scambi.
Un'altra bella testimonianza, interessante per il luogo e per l'età.

Hello Gert, Big jump in space and time again. And you know how I am jealous about this ride with a truck :). (In Cuba there are strange means of transportation I wonder if it will be possible to try to go by something different hat the buses for tourists). And what a fantastic scene from the market, I see here all locals although from different nationalities. interesting what they have there.
Warm regards Malgo

Hello Gert,
Thanks for another great oldie. It's interesting to see the variety of items for sale. Some of them I can recognize, like the jars of Vaseline. I wonder what's in some of the other jars, like the yellow-orange substance. It looks like jelly, but it's probably something else. :-) Lots of great colors and details in this one.

Ett stort myller här också men en snyggt komponerad bild. En halvcirkel med män från bakgrunden och upp mot dig, på vänsterkanten med att rött skynke som central blickpunkt. Vad är det i burkarna med rött lock?

Hello Gert.
Fantastic and very interesting picture, with all this gallery of characters, you can make a study of the remarkable differences between them, almost do not know who are the buyers and sellers who, but if we can recreate the view that the quantity of the items illustrated.
Very good brightness and sharpness, with beautiful colors.
Well seen and done better. I like it
Have a nice day.
Best wishes.

Hi Gert!
I've always heard that Algeria is a very nice country, pity that it's not so safe! This is an old one and so interesting. Seems they had lots of things to sell in the market, I'm not sure about how different they are now. They all seem to dress differently but they look very interested in the goods there. Good quality shot!

Hi Gert
another interesting blast from the past.
so what exactly do you do in these African cities?
I only ask that because I would imagine its very non-touristy.
I doubt they have hop on and hop off buses lol.
you would be solely on your own to find things to investigate and to see.
as often is the case, we rarely see women in these types of shots - i wonder why its that way. culture i suppose.
perhaps the men don't ALLOW the women/wives to do such bargaining.
interesting to view all the items and i like the crowded nature of the scene, its real and rough
cheers

Great candid of this bustling bazaar with everying and nothing being sold to obviously interested customers.

Hello Gert,
Kodachrome slides, masterfully scanned, allow you to present images as if they were shot with a good digital camera now, instead of with an analogue camera 35 years ago. The Tuareg (top) is concentrating on the products available as are all the others in the busy market scene. But I don't see any curved daggers and scimitars he might be interested in.

Hej Gert,
