I'm wondering, Clifton, whether you perhaps were using the high compression (low quality) jpeg mode on your camera while you were in Romania? That might explain these compression artifacts (see the smooth areas in the foliage and grass), even though the image is not so compressed now. If so, I'd suggest you only ever use the highest resolution/highest quality mode.

Default To greg: Compressing Cannons

This was one where I was still sacrificing quality for size, which isn't intended to be Freudian, despite the subject of the photo. :)

In the effort to keep the prize goal of 800 px, and get below 200MB, I tried a program I saw mentioned in a forum here called NeatImage. Straight out of PS, I was still over even at "Save as" level 7. That, coupled with the fact that I realllyneed a higher res monitor, left me with a muddled image.

I shot this on my first trip out with a Nikon D70, and while I was still getting the hang of it (fairly obvious, I'd bet), I did manage to get it set on the largest, finest jpeg setting... but probably should have went further, to RAW format. Live and learn, or at least I hope to do both.

Thank you much for your very helpful input on several photos today. I will try not to barrage you with lengthy individual replies, other than this one, as it's too late to go back now...
