Photo Size

I am sorry if there is an easy answer to this, but I am new here, and I am still learning :].

Ok, When I try to upload a photograph, is says the maximum file size is 250 kb, an the only way I can achieve this is by making my photographs smaller than they need to be. And I have it set on 72 DPI if that makes a difference.

Am I missing something here? An easier way to have bigger photos?
