Although well composed, this shot is far too dark. The camera is 'torn' between the brightness of the sky and the relative darkness of the locomotive, and in this particular instance has opted for the exposure of the sky. A graduated filter (such as a Cokin grey G2) would have balanced exposure between the two and enabled the detail on the 8F (such as the coupling rods) to be picked out.

I think this coulkd be down to how monitors are calibrated,on mine the exposure is blanced and I can see detail in the area around the coupling rods.
Before I had my current monitor I was told my shots were overexposed because I was compensating for the darkness of the monitor |
