Default Trekearth limited only for travel photos?

This is the question i wondered.
Why on a site called Trekearth - which the name is very explicit ! -, there's some photos totally out of this topic..
I wouldn't quote some photos, but I think you've seen it many times..
Do you think i'm Right to tell you that?
Do you think Adam would create a new folder for these kinds of photos?
I think Treakearth wasn't created for this sort of picture at start..

What do you think about it?
Thank you.

I totally agree. The problem is that a 'policy' is very hard to police. The 'TOS Violation' option is about the best that can be done, but this is subjective. An alternative folder might work, and a visitor could then choose to ignore the 'miscellanea', and the site may in fact return to it's original objective. We can only hope.

'Photo of my mate in the pub' doesn't seem - to me - to fit the remit of this site.

Ron.

Okay, at the risk of getting blasted:
1. posed shots of friends are not TE material. When i first joined, i uploaded three posed shots of two friends, but deleted them after a couple of weeks and more thought about what TE was about.
2. snapshots of friends are obviously also not TE material.
3. shots WITHOUT A CONTEXT of common animals and flowers are not TE material. That means a landscape of tulips seems to be representative of the Netherlands, but a close-up of a single tulip seems like a common flower. A close-up of a sheep-dog is pretty boring, but a sheep-dog working some sheep would be very interesting to see.
4. (almost) Needless to say nudes and PhotoShop creations are not TE material.

However, as Adam has wisely pointed out, we don't need to travel to take shots that will teach others about the world through our photography. So a cityscape looking out your own bedroom window requires no travel at all, but ESPECIALLY if you added a nice description of what we were seeing, it could teach me about your place in the world.

Default A few clarifications...

I generally agree with Ronners/CedarBough.

TrekEarth is not dedicated to travel photography exclusively, although travel photos fit perfectly into the TE mission of "learning about the world through photography" and its location based structure. There are other types of photos which also fit nicely with the TE theme such as documentary photography.

There's a bit of a gray area as to what is appropriate. If it contributes to 'learning about the world through photography', it's generally OK.

Note that if a new member initially posts multiple friend/pet snapshots, the photos will be removed and the TE concept will be explained to the member via email. If a longtime contributing member decides to post one every now and then, I will let it pass.

Cedar> You can take a single flower with a macro, but if there's some context with. I mean that if we can't see in the background somthing representative but a white wall.. Or if a text or comment is added to the picture.
Taking photos in you city or country to my mind is perfect.. nobody knows as well as you your own city. And you're always a traveller even in your city or country..
But taking a mate or a member family like a familial photo with no artistic of informative view is for me an inadequate thing to post it here.

I see that we're are on the same wavelenght.. Happy to see that.

See you.

You have the option to scroll on by, so why not do so? To me the most significant part of spring in the UK is seeing the bluebells in flower - and I find flowers in general evoke spring for me. Just because you don't find a category appealing doesn't mean it doesn't have merit to other people ;-)

I must say I am a little disappointed to see that some very rigid guidelines as to what is and what is not appropriate for this forum are sugested for implementation by some of the members. My message to them: Lighten up! Enjoy photography! After all that is what we're here for.

To all :

Well, my point of view could not be shared with orther people, but to my mind, i don't see the point to post some photos which have absolutly no link with trek and travels in general.
But you do what you want, it's your business, not mine, and even if i don't see the point of these different photos, i'll keep on visiting this site.
bye.

"Learning about the world through photography" is a very attractive and precise objective. Wether you travel or not, posting pictures with a local history or typically representative of a city/region/country, is great as long as it's not just a snapshot, but an original "study" of the subject. But it also has it's limitations. As, I suppose, many of you, I deleted some of my early shots not complying with this and that's allright. I would suggest that everybody does the same with a critical eye, giving also an opportunity to upgrade their own album.
Now, beyond this main objective, there is another category, that I would call "beautiful and/or original pictures", but not complying with TE original purpose. Many shots are NOT exclusively related to a precise geographic atmosphere, like : some people, some single flowers, some animals, some sunsets/sundawns/storms, some trees, some waters, some snow, some objects, etc... but some have superb photographic quality and can be a source of inspiration for the community. I think it is hard for Adam to have to select amongst them and delete (except obvious offence, of course). The members should simply judge by themselves and sanction by not quoting, if poor quality or not complying with TE objectives, according to their opinion. Why not put a simple rule: pictures not having been commented positively by at least 3 members within, let's say, 6 months, would be automatically withdrawn. This would have many advantages: - enable a better rotation... - upgrade the level in general... - As Nina writes "Lighten up! Enjoy photography!"... recenter TE objective taking in account members wishes. This was just my contribution to this discussion. Wathever, TE is really a very enjoyable community with lot's of good inspiration, thanks to Adam's hard work.

There are many other photosites on the web, some of which I've participated in, that DO NOT limit the shots submitted in any way at all. Even graphically pornographic, completely digitally altered etc. can get on. I think that if someone wants a site where they can upload ANYTHING at all, they should go to one of those sites. Trek Earth has a specific aim, and if each person says "but i want to share this more than I care about the aim of TE" then soon our site looks just like the others. Please, let's keep TE special!

if anyone needs a different site:
