f5.1 is pretty low. If he wants high he should buy a different camera. Simple.
Or, if Goodwill is happy with the highest setting of his camera, stick to a tripod if the circumstances under which he is shooting require an unhumanly steady hand. But, knowing your skills and messages, I'm not telling you anything you didn't know already.
