You are correct, this image shows a section of the river Cherwell.
A mile downstream the Cherwell merges with the river Thames, in South Oxford.

FYI, DOF is really of little concern when using a really wide angle lens - my Canon 10-22mm makes it really easy to get good DOF.

Yep: 10mm + Polariser.

I seem to use that format all the time I'm in the mountains, rarely zooming down (it's a 10-22mm zoom).

My problem is with getting the exposure right; it works ok here,...
