New site goes live May 20th

The new design of TrekEarth will go live May 20th at 9:30AM, PDT.

You may experience about 15 minutes of intermittent down time beginning at that time.

Thank you to everyone who was so helpful during the beta testing period. We hope you enjoy the new site!

still the same design right now in Europe. I guess in a few hours we'll see the new design... I'll have a look in about 12 hours (have the late shift). Good luck with it !

Looks like you're impatient Lukie, posting this message nearly seven hours before the announced cut-over time... :o)

Justine

I can see a lot of bugs still existing, especially the page for upload, the menu for date is hidden and not sensitive to mouse click. Anyway, good to see the beta testing moving along. Bill

thank you, the new version has less functionalities ! it is not faster... & I just lost my lists, we can't see our personal galleries we made : favorites, lists,
this new version isn't complete, did you miss something or did you decide it is better to change this functionalities ? in both case, this is not fine

It still has the feel of a Beta version ....very very slow...
Took me ages to find my "Lists", I maintain that that "TE" Logo hanging there on the left is a sore for the eyes. Thanks for the work, but...well, we'll see.

I skimmed the beta, and I was pleasantly surprised to see this up already. I've just taken a thorough perusal over the past 15 minutes. All in all, it's a very pleasing, aesthetic makeover that showcases our work well. Thanks so much for all the hard work that went into making this happen!

Sorry to say that but the previous version was much much better and user friendly. This is my personal opinion of course.

Jonathan and JY : exactly those lists yes, I see them, Under Community and Groups, but I cannot access them anymore...(mine are private). Hopefully this will be solved soon, it was already mentioned in a previous forum ! It's a great way to keep track of people and their uploads...

Re: New site goes live May 20th

hi Justine

So incredible, how can they launch a beta when it is not fully functional? Still many bugs. Now upload is not possible because the scroll button is not available, not even the insert window. If the EXIF data is not available, the menu for date is OUT of view/reach for the mouse click or keypad typing.

Leo61, at least scroll for notes, you can use the up/down arrow key.

Have to stop upload for the next few days until they fix the bugs to get the date column fixed.

Cheers, bill

Re: New site goes live May 20th

Sorry, my English skills are limited, I would go straight to the point.

I do not like the new version for several reasons:
- The site in fluid design (Which extends over the entire surface of the browser) was much more effective.
- For many reasons, the new look is less efficient and readable (I could give my opinion on this subject, but it is too technical to explain it in English, But if you're interested in my criticism, I can do it in french).
- He lives a few bugs: http://fr.trekearth.com/critiques.php?filter=MrSoul&type=qreceived

However, the new logo is much more beautiful!

Re: New site goes live May 20th

Jonathan, your "favorites" consisting of "people", are on the right side when you are on your profile, scroll down a bit, actually now you see them by their "profile photograph"...which is rather disturbing visually, in my view, too many images, simply.
Your "favorite" photographs : when you are on your account profile, on the right upper side you will see a kind of folder called "Snapshot", you will find them there...not particularly "logical"...

Yeah, Remy, I agree, the look is just on the side of "too much"...too many things visible all the time, and not when one just wants/needs them. Crowded :-).

It's 12:45pm here in Houston, Texas and I was just clicking the refresh button to find out that the new layout is active! I am so excited!

I really like the design very sleek. I also think it's good that points are no longer displayed behind photos. It somewhat evens the playing field in my opinion.

Re: New site goes live May 20th

I think it's terrible! It's not about photographs anymore, but about the amazingly big part for advertisements to the top and the right. It's one big advertisement site and not a photography site anymore.

And then I'm not even talk about al the bugs.

I was already posting on Flickr, but now I really need to go and look for another professional photography site. This is looking sleek, but not about photography anymore.

Re: New site goes live May 20th

the horror! the horror! impossible to focus on the pictures, impossible to focus on anything. it looks messy and commercial. i have no issues with change, but really, it was nice and calm before, now it's just a mess.

Merline 05-20-2009 06:15 PM

Re: New site goes live May 20th

Yep ! The more I look at it, the less I like it...sorry for putting my thoughts in different pieces, but it's so slow, that it made me loose my first input.

1) Like Deniz I think that the way the photographs are displayed is horrendous, with the vertical ones much larger, and sometimes leaving empty spaces inbetween two formats...it's everything, but not even a tiny bit "elegant" or simply pleasing to the eyes. Imagine that in a real gallery....Certainly not "professional" looking, although I acknowledge that's not the first aim of the site :))).

2) Why are the titles of the photographs not displayed anymore ? One single reason for that ?

3) When you finally to to a photograph, and want to see if there is a thread going on, you have to open each single response, without seeing the first few words, to give a hint, like before....

4) Advertisement too obvious...Yes, sleek, and messy at the same time :).

5) Comments received: the full name of photographer. On display : the nickname.
Why not keep the nicknames, far easier, for all displays ?

SIMPLY HORRIFIC, I GOT NO WORDS FOR IT!
This is ONE BIG AD, it's got nothing to do with photography... WHAT AN INCREDIBLE MESS!

The update might not be fully effective, the logo (top left) has just appeared. It is really nice.

Re: New site goes live May 20th

The link to the old site has been posted many times now, as a lot of people were so discontented with the new one.
It's: http://beta.trekearth.com/
bconver, the new director has told us they will let us use the old site as long as possible. If they do disactivate it one day, I hope their new site will have become perfect!
In the meantime, it would be a good idea to give our ideas for improvement, just for the time when they put a stop to the old site.
however, I will note them down for a while, and post them later, as they seem to be submerged by correspondence just now!

When I woke up this morning, I really hoped it was all a bad dream I had and TE was still the old TE I knew. But unfortunately, the nightmare was actually reality and we're still stuck in this new mess called 'development'....

Re: New site goes live May 20th

To Dpbours and especially the administrators!
For me, the change-over from the old site to the new site happened yesterday (20th) while I was having dinner! I had known nothing about it before, as I don't often visit the forums!
I was certainly very disappointed because I really liked the old site!
Now, reading about all the uproar, I have been thinking a lot about it! Honestly, why change something that works well?
Why not just change what didn't work well? Like the lack of communication from the administrators. They would have been better communicating more with the members than wasting time ceating such an unneccesary upheaval!
I have been on TE for 2 years and 9 months now; visiting Google and Wikipedia for about 7 years; and I think I can say that it's because they keep the same outlook that they are so popular and successful. If people need to use them, they know they'll find what they want quickly and easily!
It's not the look of the site that counts, it's the content and the practical side! Between you and me, there was nothing wrong with the look of the old site!
Some people like the brown colour of the new site! Quite honestly, brown is not my favourite colour, and it's not the most cheerful either!
As I have read other people write , the maps of countries visited was a lot clearer on the old site! On my map, I can hardly distinguish Greece!....
Is it too much to hope that they will do away with this new site lark?

Re: New site goes live May 20th
