    Hallo Johanet

Very striking composition. The doorway opening out onto that incredible vista. Your depth of field and the colours of the garden wall complimenting the colour of the depth of field beyond all contribute to a superb image.

I like the vibrant colour of the mosaic work on this mausoleum. Judging by the size of the door the structure is deceptively tall. Sharp focus, well composed.

    Hallo Dennis

This image is great for a number of reasons: the peacefulness and serenity of the scene, the pastel colours of the boats, the fantastic reflection in the water, and finally, your absolute pin sharp focus. Very pleasing all round.

I've been browsing through your collection of posts and seeing this I had to comment. As a photograph I don't think it is necessarily a reflection your known creative or technical skills, although I do like the perspective and the way the the colours recede down the passage. The wall is however a unique and unusual representation of a nation, underpinning the Rainbow Nation brand and a good subject for a TE post.

As with so many of your notes, your note to this image is informative and thought provoking – thank you.

I like the feelings of pensiveness and wistfulness conveyed by the relaxed posture of the subject and his gazing into an invisible distance. You’ve managed to achieve a neutrality, an ease, about being photographed, which presumably he was aware of. I also like the way in which you’ve managed to sharply etch the profile of his face and head against the dark rock of the wall behind him by using the angle of the light on his features.

Actually, John (Tyro) has said everything I want to say about the image, so I’m not going to bore you with it all again. I want to, however, reiterate his comments on your colour density and balance here. I agree that they’re perfect for the image and wouldn’t change them a bit. The Maasai are an ebony skinned people so his skin tone is spot on as far as I’m concerned. Yes, the red is very strong against the dark skin, but only you can tell whether the tone is true or not. I don’t however find it unnatural or overpowering at all.

Nice one – after much contemplation I’ve decided to give you your 2 point smiley!

    Hi Ali

This image has so much character! Definitely worth a thousand words, ranging from the shoe samples displayed against the wall, the wall paper that’s been torn away, the untidy state of the shop, the interaction between the old cobbler and his visitor etc. It is a good composition.

The light must have been fairly poor, because I notice you worked at an aperture setting of f5.0 at 1/80 and an ISO rating of 400. Better lighting is the one aspect that would have improved the picture. It nevertheless remains a very nice image.

I spent some months in Iran some years ago and have very fond memories of your country, its people and ghorme sabzi.

    Hallo Johanet

This old truck looks the way I feel sometimes at the end of a hard week!

Your choice of B&W for this image is very appropriate. It underpins the sense of age, forlorness that you're obviously trying to portray. The bright sunlight and harsh terrain adds to the ambience. Well captured.

Your image is so characteristic of urban development in so many middle eastern cities. The almost complete lack of colour with the only exception being the small blue mosque in the right middle ground is striking. Well captured.

There is something mezmerising about a dam overflowing and your image here illustrates that so well - the height of the drop over the top of the wall emphasised by the white curtain of water against the dark colouring of the wall. Well composed, sharp focus.

    Hi Iain
Your image here certainly has a somberness about it which is not entirely misplaced considering the impoverished circumstances into which this fellow was born and will probably spend the rest of his life.

We don't like looking at this side of life, but sometimes it is necessary, if only to remind us just how good we have it, even when times are really tough.

    Regards, JP
