Photographer's Note

TIENEN is a town of some 30.000 inhabitants in (Flemish) Brabant. It became a regional center in the 16th century after the Gete river became navigable. Like most cities in the Low Countries, Tienen has had a rough history of sieges and revolts.

In Belgium Tienen is best known for its sugar refinery and "Klontjes van Tienen" still is a standard term in most Belgian households, refering to those famous little sugarcubes.

This picture shows the former city prison. It's called "het Toreke", meaning the little tower. These days it houses a small but interesting Gallo-Roman museum.
