Photographer's Note

A kayaker is shown navigating the treacherous Potomac River in Great Falls Park in Virginia. I particularly enjoy visiting this place during summer and autumn as it is only about a 20 minute drive from my house.

Near the Nation's Capital, the Potomac River builds up speed and force as it falls over a series of steep, jagged rocks and flows through a narrow gorge. This scene makes the falls and Mather Gorge, named after the first National Park Service Director, Stephen T. Mather, a popular site with local residents and tourists.
