Photographer's Note

Last summer Paris started a new program, called Velib', of free short-term bike rentals--the first hour is free (once you've paid a small fee to register for the system), then you start paying. But most people just use them for short trips, to the wine shop or the Metro station or wherever. There are stands where they can be checked out and returned, all over the city. The city has to move the bicycles around some to keep them from piling up at certain destinations--for example, a lot more people check out bikes at the top of Montmartre and ride down the hill, than check out bikes at the bottom and ride up!

This is not a Velib' bicycle--the system had not started yet when I took this shot in June 2007.
