Photographer's Note

Another thing I am somewhat addicted to shooting is hands, you can add them to chess players, people praying, men smoking, etc.

This was taken at HsingTien Temple in Taipei last Sunday on an outting with Mark. HsingTien rages with activities, the blue robed nuns (this is one) are kept very busy offering blessings to the faithful. AT any time, there are hundreds waiting in line to receive their blessing. I believe that the temple is somehow associated with good fortune, my friends who have visited for religious rather than photographic reasons have gone there to pray for a promotion or when they want a new job. I am sure there are other reasons, as it is quite common for parents to bring their childs clothing to be blessed as well. With all the activity at HsingTien though, it is difficult to take good photos. The temple is designed in such a way that almost all angles will have some large portion of horrendously hard like inviting nasty blowouts in your images. The masses of people are too jam packed to create a shot with good lines or a single strong point of interest. At least for my skills, this is true.

One thing I noticed, and the reason for my taking this photo, was that the nuns all carried the same type of mechanical counter you see here. I am most used to seeing bouncers at nightclubs with these to ensure they don't allow more patrons than capacity. I have also seen similar devices used by people doing traffic surveys. I am guessing that the counters are used by the nuns in much the same way as a rosary is used by a Catholic; to keep track of the number of prayers they do. I could be wrong about it all (including the rosary thing), I am really not well educated about any religion to be honest.

Anyways, the interesting counter thingy, my love of hands and the religious text you see here, they all add up to my reason for taking the shot.
