Photographer's Note

Everyday life is so rich in layers. One can observe the layers of different worlds simply by looking outside through the window. The Sugar Factory (Zaharna fabrika) is one of Sofia's remains of the past and an icon. Unfortunately - a dying one. One by one, the roofs fall over everything, sometimes crushing people who'd gone there to steal some iron parts from the main columns. A building of historical value would probably end demolished for the safety of people and new trade or business centres would emerge.
A chimney from another factory spreads fume as if the old sugar factory was still operational. The hope is in vain.
The layer behind is our future. The school stands out in the middle background, with a thousand young people inside becoming grown-ups. They're a part of our future and I hope it's brighter than the sky on the day the photo was made.
Behind the school the lives of common people begin, flow and end. The architecture preserves the memory of the communist era and is somehow a bridge between our past and our future.
And while all of us try living our lives in the best way we could, the mountains stay still as they've always done.
