Photographer's Note

On the 19th I went grape grazing with a group of Japanese friends who were, unlike me, wine connoisseurs. It is a wine fest of sorts, as people in cars or hired buses go from vineyard to vineyard, taste wines, try local foods and dance to various bands.
The event was initially canceled as a sign of respect to the bushfire victims- but then there was a change of mind as the local people felt that to hold the event would bring back the city folk and help the Yarra Valley wineries and shops regain their feet, at least for those businesses still functioning.

This photo is misleading in terms of the damage caused by the fires, as behind me stood intact the small winery's buildings, but across the small sealed road the bush (forest) was burnt black and the owner was in the process of bulldozing the area adjoining his property. He told us that the netting, used to protect the grapes on the vines from parrots and Indian minahs, had melted from the heat. A messy job followed in clearing the gooey substance.

Still, there he was, with his wife, encouraging us to taste the wines from his cellar, cheerful and philosophical about it all. He, unlike many, had his life and home.
