Photographer's Note

Children's physical and intellectual immaturity makes them particularly vulnerable to human rights violations. Their ill-treatment calls for special attention because, for the most part, children cannot speak for themselves: While I was living in South America I saw children perform many work-duties; from working to make brick from the land to selling water-bottles on the streets such as this young boy. This photo was taken at a bus terminal in Porto Viejo, Ecuador. I was waiting in the bus when I saw this kid and his homemade tricycle full of waterbottles (sold for 30 cents) and 2-liter coke/fanta bottles (in which they would poor into cups for 10 cents). I would see many kids working this "beverage" circuit, but this kid particularly grab my attention by his very clean blue shirt that matched his 'work' tricycle. I would pass through this bus terminal many times; with each time I would see this boy selling his 'wares' so to speak. Many times I would wonder if he only worked; or if he went to school as well. I do know however that many of the children I came across did both. :(
