Photographer's Note

Here is what remains of a colombian coral in the beach of death in Taganga.

Corals belong to the Animal Kingdom, Phylum Cnidaria, Class Anthozoa. These animals are sessile and have radial symmetry. They are an ancient group, with a fossil record of over 50 million years. Many have described the underwater gardens of corals and beautiful color. Coral reefs are among the most productive ecosystems and are distinguished by their wide diversity, comparable only to tropical forests. Corals have the ability to grow in nutrient-poor waters, yet provide shelter for communities of algae, fish and invertebrates in waters that would otherwise be empty.
There are different types of corals: soft corals and hard corals ahermatypic and better known as stone or hermatypic. In the reefs of the Indo-Pacific have been identified to 700 species, while in the Atlantic there are about 145 species and the Caribbean have described 60 species of hard corals. They have developed incredible biological interactions.
