Willys Jeeps in Salento

In one of my previous notes, I was talking about the transportation by jeep from Salento to the Valle de Cocora.
In the Coffee Triangle in the Department of Quindνo the old Willys Jeeps, the military vechicle of the US during World War II, are still in use.

In the 1940s the first jeeps arrived in the country for military purposes.
The coffee farmers in Quindνo saw in this vehicle the solution for the difficult roads in the mountainous region where the plantations are located. This replacing their beasts of burden.

Even today you will find these Willys Jeeps on the unpaved roads there carrying people, coffee, goods, livestock, etc.
You will find newer jeeps but also vintage Willys-branded jeeps.

This picture is taken on the main square of Salento at the stop for the jeeps that bring tourists to the Valle de Cocora.
