Photographer's Note

Cathedral of Ferns, Mount Wilson, Blue Mountains, NSW, Australia: tree ferns (Cyathea australis).

Cyathea australis, also known as the Rough Tree Fern, is a species of tree fern native to southeastern Queensland, New South Wales and southern Victoria in Australia, as well as Tasmania and Norfolk Island. It grows in moist shady forest, both coastal and montane, at an altitude of up to 1280. One of the biggest concentrations of tree ferns is in the Mount Wilson area of the Blue Mountains.

This was shot on colour print film, but I thought the image gained in graphism when the colour was removed.

No EXIF data, for obvious reasons.

Hi Will,
These ferns feel so strange, compared to tiny ferns that are found in Finland. Well framed view with the trunk reaching centre of the frame from bottom right. Almost pure black and white works well. The plant is quite recognizable, even though I've seen those myself only a couple of times.

Your conversion to black and white has made a rather surreal image, the repeating lines and the broken light look great. Really nice idea. That's a hell of a lot bigger than any fern I've ever seen!

I like very much the absence of clear scale and the way the grephic patterns of the foliage fill the frame. Your composition looks dynamic in a vertical frame, the trunk offers a solid perspective. I like the definition of the leaves and how the light filtres through them and we get an impression of intimacy. Congratulations and thank you!
